Has anyone had any experience with this mini disk recorder? Is it worth getting?

well, its a bit pricey for what it does, your better off going with either of the backlight models...which are good for concert venues once the lights go out, you dont wanna have to use a flashlight or cell fone to look if your recording or not...

mz-m100 for around $375

or

mz-rh10 for around $300

You should not get it because it does not have Hi-MD. For music taping, I'd would only buy a Hi-MD and they start around $165.  But if for some reason uncompressed audio is not important to you, you can get a standard MD for even less money.

I've been looking at the Sony MZ-M10. Im justing starting out with the whole taping thing. As for mics, i was looking into the SoundPro SP-PSM-3. Would this be a good starter rig and also give me room to upgrade in the future?

sounds like it would be a great setup period.you could always upgrade later or add new toys(preamp, mics, ect.)
one more thing, look into preamps/battery boxes with a bass roll-off feature.it really makes a big improvement as far as control over the mdr recording process and improves quality.

you definitely need to go w/ a BACKLIGHT model...spend the extra dough now, b/c when the lights go out and you cant see anything, its gonna be a SOL situation  8)

I have an RH10 I'm happy with. The technology in these Hi-MD recorders is quite nice though I'm a quibbling sort and have outlined in excrutiating detail the pros and cons on my site. The audio engineering category page is the place to start. If you are interested in Apple compatibility there is an identical model called the MZ-M100, which I also discuss.

The EL dispays on these look great in normal room light or darkness, but fade to nothing in bright sunlight.
Theatre of Noise contains info on recorders and mics. Plus rants about film, observations on politics, and other stuff.
