The dream Schoeps rig..
« on: May 16, 2006, 07:56:21 AM »
So i've been dreaming dark dreams lately.
Very dark.

In my dreams, I've got a new rig...cost no object....

It consits of Schoeps mk6 caps (those are the 3 pattern vertical SDs, i believe), the KCY Y cable and the scheops VMS box.  Line out of that into a Mytek and being recorded via an MT or some other device.

what would that scheops rig cost?  Probably $2k for the caps, 1k for the cable and another 1.5k for the preamp ?  I'm guessing ... i'm sure its more.

since you're dreaming, why stop at 2ch's.....
charles fox has been experimenting with 4ch (schoeps) mixs and they smoke.  toobes into two channels and then 4v's into a vms > 744.

cost not an object.....

After years of not only experimenting, but applying 4 channel recordings to a myriad of projects,  I don't find it worth it.  It's become more nostalgic than anything else for me.  There are certain specific applications where this is advantageous, but I don't see it as a standard in taping, live PA or other stereo applications.

There are exceptions, though.  My opinions are based on the fact that when people do 4 channels recordings, they are using microphones with very similar polar patternns;  An omni & card, sub and Hyper, etc, etc.  There isn't enough variant audio coming in from both sets to make a huge difference in the mixdown and warrant the process.  It's only when you are mixing two entirely different patterns that you will start to see a true advantage to a 4 channel microphone mix.

Lately I have been recording with DPA 4021 & CMIT 5U (sometimes replacing this with the KMR 81i due to size) into a 4 channel mix.  This is producing an incredible 2 channel live mixdown and also VERY fun to work with in post (moreso than my previous 4 channel work).  The captured audio from the card is complimented very nicely by the high performing shotgun in many of the venues tested (implemented at Jazzfest 2006 1st weekend for a 5.1 doc).  It probably wouldn't work well in a small room, but I don't see anyone running a 4ch mix in a small space unless for surround.

Nick, I sent you a PM with Schoeps and Mytek pricing. I get good deals on both. ;) Sonosax too. Hell, most anything here in Germany.

they sound pretty good.  a little thin on the high end and not as much low end as the mk41, but very similar in sound.  essentially they are designed to replace the mk41/cut1 that was the standard in film/tv.  now the cmit has become the standard not only because it has the cut1 feature plus other setting right on the mic but is also considerable lighter.  the only pitfall is that it is much longer, and to me this is a major drawback (see post about the 81i).  overall i like it, but running tests between this and the 81i, the neumann beats it hands down when applied to both booming actors and concert taping.  the true test of the 81i will be recording matrices of bonnaroo this year from the larger stages and be able to reach the stacks from the sbd and still get a good solid 'tape'.

One thing to keep in mind with the MK6 capsule is that it is extremely fragile.  Probably not the capsule you would want to stealth with or put in your bag with the windscreens on after a long day of festie taping.

If it gets dropped on cement......Its time to find another capsule that matches yours.  To my knowledge they are not as repairable as other capsules schoeps makes.  Teddy could probably verify that part as I have never owned them or needed them repaired and that is just what I was told by Cascade.

Cascade is not correct in this regard. The MK6 can be repaired, as long as it is a newer version. I believe the older ones used components that schoeps no longer has.

as for the c34...
would you rather have a stereo mic based on the c451 caps or schoeps caps?
thats a no brainer.

Id rather have the c34 anyway, but with the Stephen Paul mod to the c34....that poor little Schoeps wouldnt have a fighting chance. I like schoeps for Orchestral work, but dont find them nearly as universal as the AKG mics, due to that HF frequency bump..The bump helps in diffuse field orchestral recording, but I dont like it anywhere else.
