TSKB- Systems w/over 2gig ram?
« on: October 23, 2006, 04:04:32 AM »
So I'm building a new box, and most of the possible mobos will hold up to 8 gigs of ram.

Has anyone gone over 2gigs?

Worthwhile for 24/96 audio?

I want to take 2gig files from 24/96 to 16/44.1 as fast as possible.

Thanks,

JAson

Hi Jason, if you're using a 32bit Operating System (Windows XP, Windows 2000 etc...) then there is no advantage for having more than 2GB of RAM for processing audio files.

What are you building?  Intel?  AMD?

I thought it would address up to 8gigs?

I have not quite made up my mind yet. It's AMD's turn though (I tend to alternate builds), and I really like the features/performance of the Gigabyte GA-M59SLI-S5.  Looking for a mobo with 8+ SATA and raid5, but other than that I'm flexible. I've got a stack of HD's waiting for me to finish this build too. I need to make up my mind soon.

if this box is mainly for audio processing, then you're fine with 2GB or less.
audio work is not RAM intensive at all.

If WaveLab or Soundforge etc.. were multithreaded it could use more than 2gigs.  However, for the versions I have these applications only open a single thread during processing - and Windows XP only allows them to eat up 2gigs on memory.

If you get a dual core CPU, Windows XP can use up to 4GB of memory - 2 per core (which = 2 per process).  Anything beyond that won't be used as far as I know.  In fact, I doubt it will be recognized - I think you need a version of Windows Server to recognize over 4. (Windows Server 2003 Enterprise probably).

Nice!  Those Athlon 64's are really coming down in price.  If you can wait until the Intel Quad core's arrive, I bet you will get another significant price drop.  I think it's mid November.

i don't think having more than 2 gigs of ram will have any impact on that

I have 4 gigs in mine, but I see no speed boosts from when I had 2gigs doing Audio work. (8-10 tracks @ 44.1 or 96)..somewhere I read that windows applications cannot address more than 2gigs of RAM? I dont remember..anyway, 2 gigs should be more than adequate. FWIW, this is with an AMD Athlon 64 3500+ CPU.

(Which I am selling, btw, just got a Dual Core 4800+..Samplitude and Sequoia 9(the DAWs I work with) can both address dual cores.

Thanks for the info guys.

I made the rest of my purchases tonight.

So the system will be:

CM stacker to hold it all,
Thermaltake ToughPower 116RU (750w modular) for juice
Gigabyte M59SLI-S5 mobo
Athlon 64 X2 4800+ with a Zalman CNPS9500 to cool it
2gigs Corsair Extreme DDR2 800
Saphire x1900GT Graphics card
WD Raptor 150g for the OS/apps
4 WD 500g SATA for Raid 5 (1TB should hold me till the 750g drives drop a bit)

Now I just have to wait for fed-ex and ups to come so I can build it.

Thinking about getting a KVM switch so I can keep the new machine as clean as possible (just OS and audio apps) and not take up space with another full PC, as this will be the 3rd running system.
