OSX track splits
« on: October 07, 2003, 09:08:19 AM »
Hey guys,

I'm wanting to do some transfers and editing on my Protools based system that is run in OSX.  What is the best way to track out the file once I'm done with the edits?  Software?  Don't think it can be done in PT's but if it can let me know!  Thanks,

Nick

I use Felt Tip Sound Studio (www.felttip.com) to place the splits where I want them and use the "split by markers" function. Then shntool fix to fix sector boundary errors...easy as pie.

I looked on the etree site and can't find shntool, keeps directing me to an expired link.  Got any other leads?

Hey Dave are you using sound studio as your recording software as well? Are you using the full version or demo. I've been using the demo version and seem to get the occasional boot out of the app while placing markers.

if you want to keep it in protools, us ethe separate region command to put in your track marks, then highlight each section one at a time and "bounce to disk".  It bounces in real time, so it is time consuming, but you are left with individual aiffs that can be burned or shn'd (or flac'd).  make sure you select 44.1 16 bit stereo interleaved as your bounce file type or else your gonna end up with multiple mono files....

Any further protools questions you have can be directed my way--glad to help!!!

Yeah, PT's in pretty nice.  I've been using it with my 002 for about 8 months now, recording my band and a few side projects for pay and figured why not do some transfers!  Have you had any sector issues with it at all, not sure if that would even come into play, but just wondering if seperating the regions and bouncing to disk is all I need to do.

thanks again,
Nick

I've had absolutely no sector problems with protools.  you should be all set.

Scott--I'm still interested in a graphical shntool.  Can you shed some light?  Finally upgraded to Jaguar...very happy with it thus far...

Yep, I use it for my transfers, full version. 2.1.1b3, and I've never had a problem with it crashing on me. I do on occasion have a problem opening its own files but that's probably because of a badly fragged HD. In that case I just open with SoundEdit 16, save as, and then open with Sound Studio again, no problems.

soundedit 16, wow.  no more os 9! :)

and heath, i wrote an applescript studio app for shntool, flac, shorten (v2.5.1 with seek tables).  it's a graphical program like macflac but with many more options and features (like shntool sector boundary fixes, etc) built in.  it can be found on the "files" section of the laptop-tapers yahoogroups (groups.yahoo.com/group/laptop-tapers)

i never really finished it because i couldn't decide what else to make it do, but it exists and i use it all the time.

it does this:
1. convert to/from shn.  when converting to shn, it appends seek tables (unlike the "carbon shorten" doug hornig did
2. convert to/from flac
3. make md5s or flac fingerprints, depending on if it's shn or flac
4. shntool length and info commands
5. fixes files for sector boundary issues.  the input files are fixed and can be output in
   a. aiff
   b. wav
   c. shn
   d. flac

if you fix and output to shn, it gives the option to create a single md5 or a set of md5s for each disc. so basically, you cut tracks, name files according to whatever it is (band2003-10-08d1t01, etc) and then drop the files onto this app.  choose fix, output to shn, make disc md5s and it'll fix all boundary errors, convert to SHN, and create an md5 for each disc.  all in 1 shot.  i like that

tell me what else to make it do and i'll work on it tonight and this weekend.  i have a plane ride fri and tues to do work on it, but i could do a lot of it tonight while i watch baseball...

soundedit 16, wow.  no more os 9! :)

Yeah, no kidding...but I like it because it has a 'selection' dialogue and also zooms in to the sample level. I just couldn't figure out Spark - the tool tips sucked and the documentation was damn thin. I don't do any post-processing anyway other than fades and the occasional paste-over for a skip or pop, so I don't need anything fancier.

Thanks for the links on the graphical shntool...definitely check it out at some point before the game tonight...
