recommend a DVD burner besides a NEC
« on: December 23, 2006, 01:51:29 PM »
I've had my NEC 3520a for a few years now and it has been a tank.  until recently that is.  I'm not complaining b/c I've burnt well over 1000 + disc without issue.  now however it will not read over half the disc I put in it.  all data dvds are made in japan and most burned under 8 x.  it won't even read studio disc for back ups.  it burns fine but won't read.  when i got the drive I put the u16 firmware on it.  I jsut tried the newer u1a firmware and it didn't make any difference.

so any other recommendations?  I know plextor are great,  I've had good and bad luck with sony/lite on.

I replaced my Nec's ,one was a reader & the other was a burner/player (DVD+ 16x) that came with the Dell with a pair of burners from LG's ..they do all the formats ,plus multi layer DVD's , and also light scribe (i don't use that) , made one a master & the other a slave & now can burn 2 disks at once from the hard drives  . the were priced right at BestBuy for 60.00 each ... must have burnt about a 1000 cd's & DVD's since i've had them .I do a lot of vines & trades .. been very happy with them , they are smaller ,  do more & don't seem to get as hot as the NEC's did .. thou they don't like the cheap cd's out of tiwawn ,china, malaysia . but i have problems with them in my truck's cd player also .. soo i only buy Japan made or swiss made cd's & DVD's    8)

I have a Plextor drive that I bought about a year and a half ago that I'm pretty happy with.  One time I was getting terrible speeds -- called up Plextor support, they helped me out -- turned out that a Windows DMA setting was all messed up.  I get a coaster here and there, but I think that's a Roxio problem...

LG
Have mine for abt. 2 years now and it works like a charm, is very quiet, and their models are cheap and read/write all incl. DVD Rom.

read reviews of writers at: http://www.cdfreaks.com/reviews/
looked at reviews of 2 LGs:
http://www.cdfreaks.com/reviews/LG-GSA-4167B-Super-Multi-DVD-Writer-Review.html
http://www.cdfreaks.com/reviews/LG-GSA-H22N-Super-Multi-DVD-Burner-Review
and they sound good.

STAY AWAY FROM PLEXTOR!!!!  Worst company in the business.  I went through 8 (yes that's right 8) drives in 3 years before I just demanded my money back and washed my hands with this company.  Plextor used to have a good name in the business but their product nowadays sucks ass.

I'm not sure what your problem with the NEC drives is.  1000+ burned discs is pretty heavy usage and the laser just could be losing intensity or be malfunctioning and not reading discs.  I would encourage you to buy another NEC Dual-Layer drive and chalk the other one up to heavy usage.  I've owned 2 NEC drives and am still using my 3520a which is indeed a tank.

I'd say Pioneer. I have the worst experience with Lite-On DVD burner (however my ancient Lite-On CD burner was great).

Another vote for Pioneer here.  Not a single problem.  Ever.  Can't say that about any of the Plextors I've owned.  Plextor has, in my opinion, the most undeserved good reputation in the business.  I can't say enough bad about their products.

Yep... another vote for Pioneer... I've have one of their 16X16 models for a little over a year now and have had no problems with it.  It's fast, likes any media I've put in it, and has never burnt a coaster that was not my fault.

Had a Sony before this one and hated it.  It was very picky about the type of media used.  To be fair though I got it back when DVDRs first started to be affordable so it was an older model and they were probably still getting things straightened out.

I know it was heavy use and that's why I said I'm not pissed.  just wanted to try something different.  so far I like the LG a lot.  again it was only $30 (same as the new NEC).  one thing I've noticed and like is the buffer does not jump all over the place with this drive which makes for a faster 8x burn (it's a 16 or 18x but I don;t have the media or want to burn that fast).  with the nec the buffer was everywhere.  seemed to realy slow down the burn.

the read speed with EAC is slow so far.  not that I use EAC much anymore but.....

as posted on the comments on newegg it takes a while to read a disc with data on it but not a big deal.
