AAAUUGH! SF5.0 just ate mike gordon!
« on: October 09, 2003, 09:14:11 PM »
FUCK!
i was pasting the 2nd half (after auto split in wavelab) of the gordo show from last night, i guess it was just slightly over 2 gb...and sf5.0 gave me an error trying to save the file to it's original name, i tried to save to a new name, and BLAM! both files are gone...the newly named one exists but is 0 BYTES...not just 0:00.000 time, i mean the file has nothing in it.  there are no temp files i can find that could be the missing audio...it just straight up killed the first half of the show....DAMNIT!
does anybody at all know a way to recover this?  anyone had it happen?  can i have a hug?  :'(

well, i am not sure how to fix it, but in the future i might try to track out the first part, then the second part and then reassemble the broken track. i know that this isnt what you want to hear right now in your troubles, but this is a good time to let others hear how to maybe try to avoid this costly mistake.  :-\ :-\ :-\

+T for your troubles, i hope you get it fixed!

i think another factor is because i was running out of space on the drive with the temp files it had created...but i didn't (i don't think) get an error referring to that and i can't find the temp files anywhere, the drive even reports that much more free space...SURELY it's still SOMEPLACE!  there's got to be a way to recover data from the drive, i was saved before and i definitely did not delete it....fuck

bump^^
apparently, sf6.0 does this too, it is starting to sound like a problem it encounters when there is not enough space left on the drive, but instead of warning about it it just destroys the files!  WTF!!?!?!?!
i thought sound forge was supposed to be a non-destructive wav editor, what a bunch of bullshit.
if i had actually paid for this software i'd march right up to sound forge headquarters and give them a piece of my mind!

good news folks.......
i got in touch with the kid who patched out of me (mini headphone monitor out to m1 - analog) and his first half is fine but the 2nd half is fucked up and he didn't get the end...so we will trade and help each other out, this is very good news.
still i am pissed at sf....it should not just utterly destroy files without my consent!

Maybe do a search on the whole drive for files files of any name, larger than 1gb (one of the advanced functions in search) and see what you come up.

ah, yeah, but were you running a dat backup as you recorded to your laptop?
recording straight to your laptop means if SF shit the bed, then you're screwed. right? there was no transferring error; it occurred at the show.
sf lost a transfer for me once. that really sucked.

the error did NOT occur at the show, it occurred post show while pasting the 2 files back together.
since i set wavelab to split files at 1300 mb (that's about 74+ minutes of 24bit/48khz audio) there were two files for the show.  i pasted the 2nd at the end of the 1st, and the resulting file was just over 2gb, which should have been a no-no and sf should have stopped me (if it was written better).  i tried to save this file to the original file name and got some error - not about file size nor about available drive space (which was also running low).  then i tried to save again to a new file name, got another error, again not concerning the issues above (size and space), and closed the file.  i went to find it and it was gone, in it's place a completely empty file with the new name i gave it.
the dat backup i have came analog out of my headphone monitor on the usbpre, so it's not going to be as superb as the 24/48 digitally pure signal because the headphone monitor isn't the greatest transfer method...but at least it's still my source.  if it sounds ok i will trade it, if not i'll get another source.
that's the low down of the high times.

USBpre, that thing is the shit
you like it schwilly?
i fuckin love mine, it sounds really good and it's so nice having one box to handle everything!  plus it's powered off usb bus so i don't have to tote around a bunch of lead acid batts, although i did have to get the n-charge for my lappy.

further details on the story...i got the backup from the dat guy, have listened to part of it and after normalizing to bring levels up to match my 2nd half, it sounds fine...there are however some diginoise spots on his recording (his m1 is dying) that i think i can get rid of safely...if i am able to recover this recording i will send out freebies to people in celebration!
plus kaki king (the opener) was the shit and she is a little cutie!

+T for the effort Simp!!! My Chicago Gordon got f-ed up too....see the 24/96 failure thread.  Perhaps we need some software that is idiot proof?!  At least something that doesn't have a file size limit, and some sort of pre/ad device with a firewire out.  Oh well it can only get better!!

becky i am with you...i can't wait for dedicated 24/96 hard disk recorders to take all the software guessing-game/hardware f-ups out of the equation!  of course, i'm sure these devices will have some flaws to start out with!!
i am about ready to just downgrade to dat, pick up a pre and a/d, and be done with the laptop!!!  but i won't, because i am a slave to 24/48!!!
