I guess I don't see why "using windows software" is a problem. There are alternatives to the properitary software that coems with a JB3 so You don't have to use it if that bothers you.  Either way it's really no different than it working as a USB hard drive. You still have to copy the files from the drive of the JB3 onto your PC hard drive.

I've had devices that worked both ways and neither was better or worse.

This box is bad. It's oft referred to as the calrad or 'greybox'. It is not bit-perfect and, my brief experience with one was horrid.
