computer speaker recommendations..
« on: February 28, 2007, 07:08:22 AM »
Hey all,

So I have to buy a new set of computer speakers for editing, tracking, and also listening.  I admitedly don't know very much about speakers so I was hoping for some help.  My budget is not very big,  I'm looking to spend about a hundred dollars, and no more than $150.  The speakers I have been looking at are these JBL's..

http://store.apple.com/1-800-MY-APPLE/WebObjects/canadastore.woa/wa/RSLID?mco=B8319ADF&nplm=T9077LL%2FA

Does anyone own these speakers or have any reason I shouldn't buy them.  Also, I have an Edirol UA-20 that would allow me to use RCA jacks..

http://www.roland.com/products/en/UA-20/features.html

Would it be preferable to use powered speakers out of the RCA jacks instead of the headphone jack on my computer?  But would those speakers be out of my price range?

Thanks for the help..I pretty much have to buy these right away so I just don't want to make a decision that I'm going to regret in the future.

I think those Rolands would be right up your alley.
they also have digital inputs, so you can run directly into them from  your soundcard or recording deck.

they sound ok.  i've got a pair in my basement that I use for background music, yet i'm surprised to hear them image and even "vanish" from time to time.

another option is the little Swan monitors.  they are very pretty, and probably sound awesome.

Klipsch Promedia GMX A-2.1 78 watts 2.1 Speaker - Retail

These were the top dog's for many years for 2.1. I have a set that are going on 5 years old and they still sound great. They were rated best speaker for the buck by maxium pc. Give them a try if 2.1 is all you need.

Tickets are dead to me.  Except the ones I have, don't have, and lost.  Not to mention the ones you have, don't have, and lost.   And the ones that other dude has, doesn't have, and lost.  Let me know if you need some tickets, I'm happy to oblige.

they make "real speakers" too, and they are not junk...so i bet that those little monitors are at the very least...worth a try.

Its funny you guys mention Monsoon. I was going to say monsoon but I was afraid you guys would laugh at me. I guess I am not the only one that likes them! I have a pair of the high end ones with the 8 inch sub and they kick some ass.. They are called the Monsoon PlanarMedia 14 and I love them. They dont make them any more though :(

Pros: When my neighbors dog would not stop barking for weeks on end, I ordered these speakers and downloaded some sound clips of dogs barking. I collaged them, set it on repeat, and pointed my new speakers out of my window and turned it up pretty loud. After two hours of that, they finally got the hint. I haven't heard the dogs bark since.
Cons: They aren't wireless satellites so I couldn't park them on the neighbors lawn.
Other Thoughts: Solid speakers, worth the money.

I think you pretty much need a 2.1 system, to sound decent with small computer stuff.  Allot of computer speakers have no bass, or the one note boom.

I've been running the Alesis M1 620 active speakers at my desktop/DAW for over a year now.  They are overlooked for there quality vs. cost.  They sound as good as anything else in this price range.

I got mine on ebay for less than $200 referb

I'm extremely happy with the Alesis M1 520 Actives, a little smaller and cheaper than the 620s.

I can vouch for the Blue Sky Media Desk.  B Stock purchase would be good, but really just awesome detailed monitors.

I've heard a lot of good things about these. I'd pick up a pair if all of my roommates weren't a bunch of sally's (they don't like music...  :o ).
