Active Monitors Recommendations?
« on: May 24, 2007, 12:30:50 AM »
So I'm looking for a pair of powered monitors for my office/DAW...
I'll use them for editing, but also for a lot of general listening.

My budget is $300-600'ish...
 :P

In a monitor comparison, I saw the Behringer Truth's really well receieved...although I'd prefer to not put anything named Behringer in my house...

Anyone try these:
http://www.audioengineusa.com/

They look great, but I've never heard them before.

Also considering a pair of the tiny Genelec 8020A's:
http://www.genelecusa.com/products/2-way-monitors/8020a/

These things have more low end than ANY speaker I've ever heard in this size range...but are a bit above what I'd like to spend.

Any other rec's are very much welcome.

nothing, eh?
 :P

I think I'm going to go for a pair of the audioengine5's.  They look like they are great, and although I won't really use the ipod stuff, it will be handy some day I'm sure.

I'm interested as well.  Need to upgrade from these crappy Klipsch speakers.   I also need a point in the right direction toi learn the differences in types of monitors...near field, reference, etc.

Looking for soundcard advice as well.

nearfield = speakers you listen to at close range (within a few feet - like a desk/console setup)

active = powered/amplified speakers

reference = nothing (marketing term)

for the record, i am loving my blue sky media desk system... (powered/nearfield)

unfortunately there are no dealers near me.  the closest is Houston.  I want to get a few recommendations and then go to a few local shops and listen, listen, listen!

Basically, monitors are tools. To me, just listening and/ or using them to mix with, are two completely different things.

When mixing, I need speakers that I can trust will give me an accurate representation of what the recorded music, sounds like.

For casual, or even active listening, I want speakers that make the music sound good. I find typical monitor/ mixing speakers too revealing for general listening.

Anybody, who is not a speakers sales person, will tell you to buy what sounds best to you. Really, you actually have to get out and listen to some speakers. Then add-in your budget and the choices will be narrowed. Bring some of your favorite CD's along. If the music you like, sounds good on a pair of speakers then you may have found your listening speakers. If you hear things that you never heard before in your favorite music, and especially if you hear glitches, you may have found your mixing speakers.

FWIW, I don't think good monitor/ mixing speakers have to cost a ton of money. If you think of them as tools, it's easier to narrow the choices, especially when matched against your budget.
Reality is merely an illusion, albeit a very persistent one.

The Blue Sky stuff is awesome...
I've heard a Pro Desk 2.1 and it really sounded amazing.  The only reason I'm not going for a media desk is that I don't want another subwoofer...stupid maybe, but I already have a large one out in the livingroom.
One reason I am digging the audioengine stuff is that they try to tune their stuff pretty flat, so good for mixing, but also is supposed to sound really nice just for general listening.

I'm telling you, those tiny Genelec's can be had for $300/each and sound amazing too.

Ahem....Yamaha NS-10M used for like $400 and then drive them with an amp.  Well, for mixing anyway.  For listening the B&W 600 series are really awesome nearfields for their price, otherwise it's really up to you.  Genelecs sound ridiculous if you can afford them (and they're powered).
Really not very evil at all now...

NS-10'S are not for listening to music.. They are firewood :) sorry I could not resist.. I like Genelec.. Very nice. The best speakers you can buy for that price.

There's a new version of the Mackie HR 824 out, so you might be able to get the tried and true prior version in your price range.

I hate the midrange tone on the NS-10s.
