Topic: mono feed from sbd

I was at a show in memephis and it was a small bar room, bluegrass show, so i went for the board feed rather then mics. it was only mono, so i copied the one channel and pasted it to the other. this was for the opener, then i decided to run my mics for the second band, Larry keel. Just curtious if anyone else has taken the mono feed and done this. My only other option from the house sound guy was to take the two channel out and "mix" my own feed, wanted nothing to do with trying to figure that out. it was set up on the side of the stage and seemed like more work then i wanted to do, not too mention me being responsiable fo rthe quality.

I'm not a big mono sbd fan. I regularly ignore opportunities to grab mono board patches.

But in some cases a two channel out is a better option.  If you've got a solo performer with a guitar, see if you can get his guitar in one channel and his vocals in the other.  Then in post you can create a much more satisfying soundstage... *and* you can add effects to each seperately.

For the case of a larger group, maybe ask for the vocals in one channel and everything else in the other. Then you will have clean vocals to combine with your aud.  Etc.

I hate doing post matrix sync-ups so I mostly never bother.

thanks. last minute call for the opener. after thinking it over i decided an aud with the crowd noise was better then the mono feed sbd.

I've done this before.  Mono is fine if that's what you can get.  Obviously true stereo is better but I'd rather have a mono something than a stereo nothing.

I recently grabbed a mono sbd feed as well. I tried a couple things to add a little ambience to it and finally decided on the NaturalVerb plugin in wavelab. I pretty much left all the settings as is except I brought the decay down to almost nothing. Give it a shot if you feel like messing around a bit. I was pleasantly surprised with the results.

Nothing wrong with a mono feed IMO... 

You've been to many concerts with a mono feed coming from the PA.  Use a little verb for some room sound and then something to widen the track a bit (I use the nomad stereo Imager) and then blend to taste from there.

Mono feeds still work just fine for soundboards if you have a stereo mic recording.  The mono feed sits right in the middle of the mix while your audience mics fill out the sound stage.  Matrix the two recordings.
