Is my rig setup right?
« on: November 16, 2003, 08:31:47 PM »
Akg 391>Samson Mixpad 4>UA-5>JB3
Is this useless to have the mixpad?
Can I buy something relatively same price to do more with or better quality with?
I have the 391s the UA5 and the JB3 any help is appreciated.  Mark

no need for the mixpad because the ua5 is preamp that supplies phantom power for your mics.
I’ve had a few weird experiences and a few close brushes with total weirdness of one sort or another, but nothing that’s really freaked me out or made me feel too awful about it. - Jerry Garcia

yup, no need for the mixpad, just something else to add more noise

dont run the mixpad.  that would be two pre's and you only need one.

sell the mix pad and get your UA5 warm modded.  you won't be dissapointed.  makes the 391's sound alot better.

When changing gear, the greatest improvement in sound generally comes with mics.  So...I'd sell the 391s and apply the extra cash towards a pair of 480s if you like the AKG sound.  Or, if you prefer a different sound, different mics.  If you have anything left over, I'd get one of the UA5 preamp mods offered by the Oade Bros (assuming you purchased your UA5 direct from them).

you have a couple options...
1. mod the ua-5 yourself, there's a link around here somewhere
2. sell it and get one from oade bros already modded (the digi mod is what you need to use the ua-5 without a computer, and maybe the warm mod for better pre-amp sound, also)
3. find something else...does anyone if the ad1000 has an optical out?  there's one for sale for 600 in the yard sale i believe, or if it doesn't have optical out you could pick up a cheap co2 or other format converter (coax > optical) to run with it.
4. spend the money on drugs and women and don't worry about taping the show. ;)
