Crackly hiss playing back 24bit on Mac
« on: December 18, 2007, 06:16:13 PM »
Hey everyone,

I'm getting a lot of crackly hiss when playing back 24 bit WAVs from a PMD 671 on my Mac. I know it's not on the recording, because when I switch the 671 to 16 bit, the files sound fine. And listening to the files directly from the 671, there is no difference in the noise level between 16 bit and 24 bit... So the Mac is the culprit.

I get the same terrible sound regardless of the application I play them in. Even dithering the files down to 16 bit @ 48k doesn't get rid of the noise.

Has anyone encountered this?

Argh, this noise seems to be in the file itself somehow -- but the 671 plays it back flawlessly. Maybe there's a bug in the Mac OS WAV importer?

Here's what a 16 bit file looks like (-48db scale, not linear):

About what you'd expect. Here's what the 24 bit file looks like:

 ??? ??? ???

What is going on with that noise?

Does the 671 record both 16 and 24 simultaneously?
How are you getting the wave file from the 671 to the mac? Firewire? USB?
Out of the game … for now?

No, the 671 is one or the other... I'm transferring the files via USB... It's totally weird.  :P

Open up Audio MIDI Setup (Applications> Utilities> Audio MIDI Setup) and check that your output settings are correct (e.g. 24bit, 44.1, 48, 88.1, 96).

So all of your 24-bit files end up like that after being transfered, or just this particular one? My first guess is a bad transfer. Can you make an MD5 of the file on your 671 while it is mounted and compare that to one of the file that's already been transfered?

They all end up like this -- they're being transferred perfectly. :(

The Audio MIDI shouldn't make a difference in terms of how the waveform looks in an audio editor...
