thoughts on psp-3....vs......
« on: April 01, 2004, 11:33:14 PM »
more specifically....480's>psp-3>dap1 (for now)
480's>psp-3>minime>dap1 (soon)
vs 480's>minime>dap1

I know lots don't like the pre in the minime.  I love the ad.  anyone run the psp-3>minime??  $ is a object.

Putting an outboard pre infront of the MMe is not a bad idea.  The gain stage in the MMe is definitely it's weak spot.  Goeff Lynch runs the mk4x/cmc6>psp3>mme.
But, it's not cheap either.  If you get the MMe without the USB, it'll save you a few $$ at least!
Get the MMe first and then add the PSP3 if youre not happy with the sound or save up some $$ to give you some other options.

a taper i know in town has the psp-3 to sell.  may hook me up for a good price.  haven't talked ot him about it.  saw his post on the yard sale board about it.  I thought about the cheaper minime but if I ever want to go 24/96.......I have heard that the psp-2 or 3 (or both can't remember) sounds similer to a m148.  that is what I want.

try running just a minime first and see what you think of the sound.  i personally don't think the mme's pre is as bad as some folks make it out to be, if you find you don't like it you can add an outboard pre later.

i have heard a lot of good tapes with psp in the chain.  but i am a fan of KISS (keeping it simple stupid) taping, and wont ever carry 2 separate outboard pre's & a to d's again.  i haven't seen many adk folks running psp -> minime.

do the 480's need a boost on the high or low end ?  i can't remember what the shortcoming is there.

fwiw, the psp2, not the psp3, is said to sound similar to the m148.

I've heard some 480>minime that I love.  just wondering.  fwiw, since my ad1000 died I have made some great tapes 480's > dap1.  I will probably hold out and get just a minime.  gonna be a while.  I'm a poor taper.....

what a about a modded ua-5 ?  don't see too many of those up for sale, and the folks who run them (myself included) are very happy with their ease of use, portability, and the all in one package.  plus the price is right for us budget conscious folk.

Sounds like you have the answer right there.

If you liked your 48x>adk tapes, you are going to love the 48x>mme tapes.

Man, sorry for not recognizing you......I feel horrible about that!

at least with the PSP-3 you can effectively take the calpots on the minime out of the equation...

I love PSP-2>apogee, but I think the PSP-3 is more similar in sound to a v2 (where the PSP-2 is more similar to a m148).

As always, YMMV

ditto what craig said. 480>mme is nice, the relatively flat transparent akg is a nice match with the fat, round mme sound, going mic in. if you want a warm sound like that, but tighter, adding an oade m148 or eaa psp-2 would be perfect.
