Topic: DVD(optical out>JB3(optical in)???????

I was tryin' to record a vault DVD (GD6-16-90) >JB3 but it doesn't pick up the signal. I used a cable w/ a toslink on one side and mini plug on the other. I plugged into the DVD optical out >JB3 optical in. What gives? Are DVD wriiten in other sound format then wav?

audio on dvd's are in PCM format, iirc...not too familiar with all the techie wording, but another thing to consider is that the dvd must have some sort of scms to block a digitial copy of the audio.  I remember that because when i copied the audio from a Oasis dvd concert i had to go analog to get a signal to my MD deck.   I'm sure someone else will chime in regarding PCM.

Check the digital settings on your DVD.  I have a player that will only lock in one of the positions, my stereo doesn't seem to care either way tho...

are you certain that the dvd has a stereo PCM track?  the optical output of your dvd can send DD (dolby digital), dts, ac3 and other compression scheme which your jb3 will not handle.  so if the dvd doesn't contain a PCM track, you can't record onto your jb3.

if it does, then you should be able to get a 16/48k signal.

i would suggest going digital out to a dac and back to an a/d- that should strip any sort of coding from it.

does the actual dvd (not the player) have a pcm soundtrack on it? that's the most important thing here.

that probably isn't going to work, i'm afraid.

most likely, the GD DVD has DTS or AC3 as the audio format. this will mean you are s.o.l. on that route. what you CAN do, though, is rip the entire DVD to your HDD. Once there, you can split (de-mux) the audio from the whole thing. Then you can convert it from whatever it is to wav.

This is doable all with freeware, but it takes a bit to get it right. Most of the technology is gleaned from the real DVD hacker guys, like the dudes selling the Chinese version of the Matrix on eBay or something.
