722 Hard drive
« on: March 03, 2008, 02:24:10 AM »
I would like to change my 40GB 722 internal hard drive to a 80GB one.

There are a few in office depot so I would like to get some advise from people who had experience changing the 722 hard drive.

Which one of the following hard drive will work because there're a few in the link below??...Each one with a different price tag

http://www.officedepot.com/textSearch.do?uniqueSearchFlag=true&Ntt=Western+digital+80GB+hard+drive

Thanks

PS I think there is something wrong with my 722 HD because it is about 75% full and today I recorded a concert hoping to have seamless splits but ended up with 2 small files named T269 and T269A....each one under 30 mins @24/96 and not seamless. Never experience this before. Do you think there is something wrong with my hard drive?

The reference on changing drives is of course Sound Devices. They have an article on this on their site (if you have not already, do register to the forum, it is the place for this kind of questions. ).
http://www.sounddevices.com/notes/recorders/drive-replacement/

From the drives specs it should be
- 5400 rpm (faster only uses more power)
- ata (may be called ata-100).
Given this, none of the choices you had fits this. There are a few on that website that fits the description but I am not really competent to answer which is better.

It might be a problem with your disc. I generally transfer all recordings out of my 722 and does a reformat whenever it is time for a new recording. Sort of believe it has saved me from problems.

By, the way, while you are at it, do check on firmware version as well. Latest version seems stable and has been working for me.

These are the drives that SD uses
http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&N=2010150380+50001077+1035907889&name=SAMSUNG

I have two of the 120gig drives, INHDD and EXTHDD.  The new firmware removes the 130gig limitation.

120 gigs gives you 59+ hours @ 24/96 two channel.

the file names with the letter are a result of some error - not sure what the cause is in your case

Actually, my backup from my CF also has the same problem so I guess it might not be the HD. Maybe it is the firmware that needs to be updated. I'm using 2.10. Looking at the updates after 2.10 there seem to be no mention about this fix. I might need to contact Sound Devices.
