i'm currently carrying a large Tamrac. not sure of the model number but it's close to the 5216: http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?O=&sku=197950&Q=&is=REG&A=details
i've joked about this before... but are there any bags on wheels (basically carry on luggage) that might be a decent transition? my current bag weighs around 35 pounds, and that gets old!
i'm thinking i might be able to find something with wheels that fits in a typical amphitheater seat and i can fabricate an internal structure or dividers...
thoughts?

those look pretty sweet. i'm gonna have to take a closer look at these, but i think you might have solved my problem.
the only thing left is to cut the foam/build a decent structure inside...
i need to figure out how wide my local amphitheater seats are...

definitely... i had an army buddy mule my bag in from the campground to the venue at the gorge last year... lol
if i get some wheels, i might be good! and it looks like these boxes are much bigger than my current Tamrac on the inside... we'll see.

Just phishend out and don't like 3.0 I've seen them exactly 90 times and its just a HUGE HASSLE to get to their shows anymore. Plus it's expensive as phuck

Well, I started using one of these (from Lowes):

to move a Portabrace PC-2 with diy shelves (attached). Shelves are plastic sign material covered with neoprene, held together with velcro.
It's strong enough to wheel that case (2 Apogee pres, DR-680, PMD671, fr2LE, 6 DVD batts) and two hard cases with mics and cables.
I even bungee my stands across the top of it.
The wheels are big enough to roll over grass and the hand truck folds flat and I stick it under a seat.
I know it's ridiculous, but, "You can't use it if you don't bring it." (from my bass fishing days)

I want to see the inside of your bag now, part of me is like scb; that should all fit in a lowpro magnum with some creative packing.
(I bought an adventura 170 recently because I carefully planned for my spacial requirements and it was the closest fit, but it's not for everyone).

Big ass bag? I've got one of these and love it. (I know you were talking about a different style of bag) This is the XL, they make an XXL. I can't emphasize enough how durable and heavy duty everything about it is. All of the various straps and webbing allow you to compact it down to a smaller size, or anchor it on a roof top. This type of bag can be a big advantage when flying (with friendly airlines like SW) because it can allow you to re-shape to fit within the size limits (but don't put valuables in checked luggage, and make sure all your straps are secured so they don't hang up in conveyer belts). The material is a heavy polysester with a plastic coating. So you can put non-waterproof bags in it, and get quite a bit of protection.
It has straps that allow you to wear it as a backpack. Desperate times call for desperate measures!

I find the type of event, and distance, make a big difference in what I bring. And some things really don't belong in the same bag. A strategy of using multiple smaller bags and putting them in a larger bag can be good. They also allow me to plan a little better. I can have a small "actives rig bag" that goes into a larger bag that holds larger pre-amps. Same for photo gear - I think it deserves a separate bag from recording gear.
Where I get into trouble are situations like "last night I recorded with the ceiling rig, today I am going into the woods to record nature and shoot photos". That leads me to reconfiguring my bag, and that can cause you to forget stuff. And you don't want to take an oversize bag that is half empty.
For serious weight or distance, or hiking, I think backpack style straps are essential to distribute the load. The thing about your back is, if you say "I'll just tough it out!"... That toughness can result in a permanent injury - it's not like your quads burning as you bike or hike. And a lot of those back and shoulder injuries tend to build on themselves and not heal.
In terms of carts, you can buy cheap carts that fold up small, and they are great for some gigs. I would avoid bags with built-in carts. Sometimes you want to bring all your gear into a venue in one trip, for security reasons or whatever. Carts are great.
Also, I like to clip my bag to a rail and get it off the floor whenever possible. That is usually via webbing and a carabiner. And when doing photography, I often hang my bag from the tripod to dampen vibrations and increase stability. It also keeps my gear bag out of the mud and sand. That doesn't always work so well with mic stands.

You know, it does look like a nice bag. I actually posted as a joke [Big Ass Bag equal Big Diaper Bag]. But looking more closely it looks like in might make a nice taper bag for me, maybe even take the place of my Big Portabrace CAR 2K.

Those PB CAR-2 (both Kodiak and standard) are very nice bags. Will hold all the equipment you want and more than you probably need and will slide under seats, lengthwise - at least under the seats at Nokia Theater and SuperPages/GexaEnergy/whatever sponsor they have this month/Pavillion in Dallas. Only thing is if you have size 14 feet your neighbors won't like you having to put them partially in front of their seats since the bag is taking up all your footroom.
If the CARs just had a clear vinyl top like some of the AOs do it would be close to my ideal bag (if I carried almost all the equipment I own but my back appreciates that I usually only carry the minimum for a specific venue).

Have you considered making a custom clear inner top, anchored with some velcro covered flaps?
You could probably glue it all, and not sew anything.

The CAR2K is a nice big bag, I'll take it when I want more options or might need more stuff. It can get heavy when fully loaded though. Agreed a clear top could make the bag even better. Something a local seamstress could facilitate if really needed. Portabrace would probably put one in for a fee if contacting them directly or building a custom bag when ordering from them. Alternately [eleven's] idea could be done too. I basically only use it as a cargo bag, having separate equipment cases on my rig and with accessories all packed in their own bags or pouches. Makes it quick and easy to switch bags, packing only what's anticipated for a given venue gig.

Yes, I've thought about having a clear plastic/vinyl top fabricated locally, even talked to a couple of folks about it but have never gotten past the is it possible to ? and what would a ballpark figure be to make one? initial question phase. Since I mainly use it for dust-free storage when at home I never pursued the matter further. Occasionally I'll load it up with everything but the stands and take it with me when I drive to out-of-town shows but the CAR-2 sits in the hotel room and only the rig I take to the show (all of which have their own smaller bags) makes it to the venue.
CAR-2 with a collapsible cart may be just what the OP needs.

unless you are a run and gun eng/efp soundman, i would just get a good big back pack with lots of packets.
