Title: clamping to chairs
Post by: Jhurlbs81 on November 03, 2006, 10:59:16 AM
Over the winter months I'd like to figure out the best way to clamp to chairs.  Anyone have any thoughts, (pics:) on the best way to do this?  I already have a super-clamp what else would i need?

clamping a stand to a chair...

You'll need a pretty big and beefy clamp to secure a stand to a chair.  I'd skip it and invest in some gaffers (not duct) tape.  Fairly compact to schlep around, will provide good stability, and won't leave any nasty residue that pisses off venues.

the other thing I see way too many people do is extend the feet of the stand.  If you can leave them compacted and still get level on the ground, tape it that way to the chair...creates a much smaller footprint and thus a lesser headache to those around you

bungee cords... IMHO, THE BEST way to tape from a theater-type venue... leave the mic stand legs folded up and bungee cord the sucker to the arm-rest between two theater chairs... some theater chairs slope downward as they get towards the floor... One 3 or 4 inch piece of 2x4 can be use to push the bottom of the stand outward before bungee cording.  I don't have any pics, but two bungee cords (along with a clamp and duct tape) are staple items in my gear bag.

Cool.  Good suggestion.

I personally like to use strip ties(larger ones) and gaffers tape.
I always keep a small lighter in my bag to melt down the ties at the end of the show.
I have never had a problem with the stand moving durning the show

when greenone and myself were taping blues traveler in  a very small casino room, we clamped my stand to achait with his superclamp and it worked great. we clamped one of the legs of my tripod to the upright part of the back of the chair. we had no room to open up the legs on the tripod.

If you wanna schlep more shit around: a second superclamp, a stud and possibly an extention bar to increase the chances of sucess.

Here is what I mean so you get an idea....

I think you can pull it off with just another sumperclamp and a stud but it ultimately depends on the seating arrangement and spacing around the structure that will become the anchor.

That's a great idea.  :coolguy:  Might have to pick up another SuperClamp to add to my pile of clamps.

I recently got a Super Clamp + heavy duty extension arm for seated head height taping. I'll try it out for the first time next week and let you know how things go!

I leave my stand at home now when taping in the seated theater near me. A superclamp, an extension arm( about 5 inches, changes direction 90 degrees, the black extension in the picture posted)  your heavy duty extension added to it and you are at head height. drawback is that if the artists actually succeeds in getting the audience off their collective ass, you can't raise your stand.

yeah, this works really well.  FWIW, the bogen/manfrotto connector stud will work with generic clamps from Ebay.

This method worked great! Way easier than using a stand.
