Seeking info on getting started...
« on: February 21, 2004, 07:30:44 PM »
Greetings!

I want to do a little research to tell me just how much cash I am gonna need to invest to get a good set up, but keep in mind this is for a newbie taper.

Getting a little older now, and would rather concentrate on the show than all my other shenanigans!

Any info would be great!

What would I need to start?  Should I start by "patching in"?  What exactly does "patching in" require?

Thanks in Advance!
...thanks mikey

Nice!  That helped a ton!

I have read the link above and have started to do a little research.  I understand what I need, but am having trouble finding equipment online.  I want to build a rig that will last awhile and support my habit, but I can't afford to spend 1000s of dollars right now.  I simply don't know exactly what to search for?

Can someone direct me a few different ways?:

Which piece should I buy first, and which is the most important?
(what should I spend the most money on)

Whats the difference between MD and DAT recording?
 - I am assuming it is that MD records to disc, and DAT to some sort of interal drive?  Is that right?

Most rigs I have seen online or at shows consist of two mics.  I am guessing this is to capture stereo sound as opposed to mono?

I searched the site here for awhile, and couldn't find any links to the above ??'s.  Please direct me to anything that might be helpful!!

Thanks a ton, and the site is GREAT!

...thanks mikey

Hey, first off, welcome to ts.com! I would definitely put the most money that you can towards mics, some options that I like in the few hundered dollar range:

AKG C1000- kind of a newbie standard, can be had for about 200 bucks for a pair

Superlux SMK-H8K- I started w/ these mics and I really like them over the C1000s, come with a bunch of accessorys, pair $130ish if I remember correctly

Octava MC012A- becoming popular for taping, 200 for a pair

You will need pantom power to power thoes:
Art Phantom III is a cheap phantom source for 50 bucks
Samson mixpad 4- this would be a little more versitile because it is also a pre, so you can adjust gain ect.. under 100 used is common

MD is a lossy format, in that it compresses the music, while dat does not. Dat records to a digital tape, not to an internal harddrive. Another advantage to dat is that you can run 1 tape up to 3 hours, while 1 md is only 80 minutes long. I would say go with dat if you can.

Yes we run 2 mics to get a stereo sound, see: http://www.dpamicrophones.com/eng_pub/ go to the "Microphone University" and click on stereo configurations. DIN, NOS, ORTF, XY are all commonly run in the field.

If you need any more help let me know, I gave you some low cost options because I dont know how much your looking to spend, if you have more money to spend, let me know and I can give you some better gear suggestions. have fun, +T!!!

Alex - Thanks so much for that info!  That helps a ton.  I am gonna try to build a "imaginary" rig and get some feedback on it.  Look for more posts soon, and I appreciate your help!

Chris - well... my main focus on taping would be WSP, but I wanted to use this year to really learn the aspects of the whole Hobby.  Probably by that time, I don't know how much traveling I will be able to do, so I will most likely be taping whatever comes through.

I live in CO now, so its a great place to learn (with all the music) but by the time panic really gets kickin' again, I might be back east in SC.

I would like a versatile setup so I could tape different bands.  However, most of those bands would be from the same Genre.

NICE!  That would be great!

So... where do I go from here?  I have looked into the mics you suggested, and they seem like they are in my range.  They have a deal for the pair with all kinds of extras.

http://www.superlux.us/smalldiaphragm.html

(down near the bottom, seems like a great deal!)

Now, I looked into the Samson mixpad 4 and found it here for $169.95.
Does that sound about right?

http://www.realmusicalinstruments.com/Samson/Stereo-Mixers/Samson-Mixpad-4.asp

So, I have mics and the mixer.  (I might switch these up with more research, but I am just trying to build a "guide")

From the mixer I go into the DAT, right?  Any suggestions on those?
(Sorry for all the questions, just want to have a good model to go by!)

... and after that I would just need a stand, and cables?
...thanks mikey

Hey, there is a mixpad on ebay for 60 bucks! http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=3705389691&category=23785

Some common dats used in the field that can be had for pretty cheap are the sony d7 and d8.. there are probably some dats in the yardsale section...

This is the stand I have, pretty nice price too http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?O=productlist&A=details&Q=&sku=253067&is=REG
You'll need a 1/4-20 to 5/8 Adapter that can be found here:
http://www.micsupply.com/standaccessories.htm

If you can solder, Id definitely recomend you make your own cables. There is info in the cable section on how to do it... I made mine with canari starquad cable and neuitik (sp?) gold connectors, 15 feet each... Then you'll need a 1/4in (2 mono) > stereo 1/8 cable to run from the mixpad to the dat.

Shoot me a pm with your address, and I get you a show or 2.

That site is great!  That pretty much sums all specifications about this piece.  I have always been partial to Sony equip. so this might be for me.

I can't seem to find a link on there to purchase one?  Do I need to search other sites for possible sales?

there is no doubt that a DAT recorder will do a fine job, but there are other options. It is generally agreed upon that DAT is slowly being replaced as the main portable digital field recorder media. I highly suggest you take the time to read this thread with a question similiar to yours, it has a lot of questions as well as a lot of direct answers:

yes it is. I forgot to mention this one. A bunch of people use these, it records to an internal hard drive, so no tapes! Superlux > Mixpad > JB3 would be a pretty nice and cheap beginers rig!

"what would be the difference in this and getting the DAT recorder?"

the jb3 requires no media (blank DAT tapes in the case of a DAT recorder).

in order to make digital transfers to your computer (which I'm assuming you want to do) you will not need to buy a digital soundcard for your computer, instead you can transfer through USB or Firewire. You also don't need to mess around with the 7-pin cable situation.

JB3 has optical in just like DAT.

I'd recommend it over DAT, I use MD, but I started before JB3 came out out.

The gb is how big the hard drive is, thus how much data you can fit on it... Do a search in the recorder section, there is a TON of info on the jb3. Also, look in the archive section, Im pretty sure that there is a thead on the jb3

OK, looks like you found the site.

If you're gonna go with the Nomad, and you want to keep it all digital, you're gonna need an accessory between the pre-amp (in your "case", the mixpad) and the recorder (the JB3). The JB3 requires an Optical input - yes, light waves - and you'll need something to convert the signal from the pre-amp to the recorder from analog-to-digital. I believe a company called midiman makes a deal called the C02 coax-optical converter - basically, a little black box that can take a coax input and spit out optical digital -> to your JB3 recorder.

I believe a company called midiman makes a deal called the C02 coax-optical converter - basically, a little black box that can take a coax input and spit out optical digital -> to your JB3 recorder.

Actually, the CO2 only converts one digital format (coax S/PDIF) to another digital format (optical).  It does not provide analog to digital conversion (ADC).  So, to run a digital input into the JB3 you'll need an external ADC.  (The JB3 has an internal ADC, but you'll achieve higher quality results with an external ADC).  You would run the CO2 between your ADC and the JB3 (if the ADC doesn't have an optical output).

For example, I use a V3 for a preamp and ADC.  My V3 outputs two digital signals: coax S/PDIF and AES/EBU.  I use a digital format converter (Hosa ODL-312) to convert the AES/EBU to an optical signal for the JB3.  Hosa also makes a similar product for converting a coax S/PDIF signal into an optical signal (ODL-276), though I haven't used it.

While some have enjoyed success with the CO2, plenty of people have encountered problems with the [ADC here] > CO2 > JB3 combo.  There are other converter boxes out there which may be more reliable.  Which options are possible depends on the output of your ADC (coax S/PDIF or AES/EBU).

let me butt in here...it was said that the jb3 takes optical in just like dat...optical is somewhat uncommon in dat recorders...true they make a 7-pin optical but the majority of folks seem to use coax instead.

secondly, to help clarify what skalinder and hurley said...the mixpad only provides analog outs...it does not convert the signal to digital.  there are some pre-amps that have that feature (ADC) included, such as the v3.  you do not *have* to use an ADC to convert the signal before recording it, however it is highly recommended with the jb3 because of the low quality of it's analog-ins (and subsequently its shitty built-in ADC).

to maximize the quality of your recordings with whatever gear you choose > jb3, get a separate ADC.

that will mean though that you're going to spend more money...probably a few hundred more than you were planning to with the current rig you've mentioned.

of course, these are just some more things to think about, ultimately you'll want to base your decision on what your own ears tell you and what your wallet can handle.  you may not be able to put together the ideal rig right away, but be sure you have done your homework before you start buying stuff.  listen to plenty of tapes, learn about each piece of gear and why you'd want/need it, factor in all the accessories like battery power/cables/stand/mounts/bag that you'll need...

i did some research before putting together my rig but i wasn't at all involved in the taping community, this site wasn't even around yet, and i might have made some different choices had i had all these great resources.  not to say i'm not happy with my tapes, i've pulled some great ones, but i certainly didn't know of all the different options there were available to me!

I don't know what either of those are?  Sorry to seem so dumb at this.

So it would be

Superlux > ps2 > inbox > jb3

the ps2 will convert my signal from analog to digital, and the inbox allows me to adjust the levels before storing them in the jb3?

what's the budget?

As far as that goes... at this point, I would rather save money for good pieces of equipment.  I am not saying I am gonna spend 1000's of dollars, BUT I would rather build a good rig slowly over the course of several months and have something thats gonna last and produce great results, as opposed to throwing a bunch of crap together over the next few weeks, only to have it not be what I wanted.

I am very particular with my music collection, and how I keep things in order, SO I have a feeling, once I start building this, I will want it to be to my liking.

So, I plan on visiting this site over, and over, based on everyones feedback, before I buy my mics.  Which I will buy first!

Sound Smart?

Superlux > ps2 > inbox > jb3

The Superlux are your mics (obviously).
The PS-2 provides phantom power to the mics.
The Inbox (also known as the AD-20) acts as both a preamp and ADC.
The JB3 is your recording device, simply storing the digital signal provided by the AD-20/Inbox.

If Stealthing isn't necessary:

Superlux>Edirol UA-5>JB3

The UA5 can provide phantom power, pre-amplification, and ADC.  They can be had new for ~$300 modded and ready for field use from the oade brothers.

The UA5 is a *great* recommendation if you're not stealthing.  I've said it before, and I'll say it again (much to the chagrin of those tired of so-called UA5 "fluffing"): IMO the UA5 is simply the best value in field recording right now.  Broad feature set, easy to run and power in the field, quality sound, and options for upgrading the quality sound another notch with a preamp mod from the Oade Bros.  There's a reason so many people have picked up the UA5 for taping.

I have been doing the the research.  I know about my mics and the JB3, I was just curious about the PS-2 and the inbox.

Stealthing is not necessary, because everyone whom I will be taping allows it.

I'd strongly recommend a digi-mod UA-5, then.  I just posted a UA-5 FAQ in the Archival Info forum.   :)

yes, yes, yes... a digi-mod ua5 and if you can afford one of the preamp upgrades from Oade get that too. that little box is very impressive...

I second the Superlux, and Im sure a few other users who use them will as well.  Some suprisingly good mics for the price especially since they come with t-bar, shock mount, windscreens and all of it in a case.  This is a good cheap stand as well...

I will probably start getting money together now for the mics.  After I get those, I can start to figure out my next purchase.  It will be alot easier for me to plan this when I land a jobby-job.

Ok... so this would be my setup.  Obviously I need cables and a mic stand, but I will worry about that later.  I have already found a good stand, but haven't done any cable research.

Is there any other $$$ hardware that I need besides the three above?

shockmounts and t-bar, bag for ua-5 jb3 and mic case.  Make sure you have USB1.1/firewire compatitbility on your PC/mac

as for cables, you need a set of ~15' balanced XLR cables.  Change the length based on how far you will need to run the cable from the mics to wherever your bag will be.  You can even make these cables yourself to save some money.  DIY instructions are in the archive and cable forums.  You will also need a TOSlink cable to run from ua-5 > jb3.  Also, a usb/firewire cable.

You also have to decide how to power that thing.  Boy, it just seems like things are quickly piling up with this rig.

your right about that!

Mics come with a hardcase and plenty of extras:  Shockmounts, windguards, and I believe the T-bar as well.

I need seperate power for my mics, ua5, and my jb3?

I thought the ua5 acted as some sort of power for the mics?

again, sorry about all these questions...

Don't apologize, we were all newbies at one point.  And yes, you're correct, the UA5 will provide phantom power to the mics.  So, you only need to power the UA5 and the JB3.  Check out the Archival Info forum for a thread on DIY RC battery packs for the UA5.  I power my JB3 from two internal batteries.  The JB3 comes with one, and I picked up another on EBay for ~$30.  A single battery will get you close to 3 hrs, two of them will get you close to 6 hrs.  If you need to power it longer, there are additional options, but let's leave it at that for now.

by the looks of it the windscreens that come with the kit would probably be useful only as smoke screens in indoor venues.  if you're taping outdoors you'd be better off spending a little extra and getting a set of larger windscreens which will be able to handle a good breeze.

yeah, i should have been a little more specific in my post ::)  generally, none of our mics have been produced with concert taping in mind, they're produced for studio or stage applications.  the accessories included in the kit packages are pretty much useless(i never used the screens or clips in the neumann skm kit, and eventually bailed on the box too, too big)  you're buying a rig now that you will eventually make upgrades within.  you won't need to upgrade from the shures.  even with the dpa ua0806(halfway down page), i ended up placing some radshak grill fabric over the capsule to cut heavy wind noise.

edit for dpa/ss link

oh yeah, a clamp.
