busted recording at a show part 2--what should I do?
« on: July 14, 2006, 01:45:31 AM »
well tonight I went to the next concert, and sure enough as i walked up to the gate--the same security dude( who took my edirol and erased the flashcard at LA forum) was there--and as i passed my ticket to the lady-he said come hear and he frisked me--I was singled out, it was not a crowded line mind you, only one entrance way to the santa barbara bowl but the security dude that got me in LA was there in santa barbara.  So he must be with the band( or related to their travelling security), so the same secruity dude approached me and checked me out-

-am i a marked man?

I am a fan club member also--and he might know that i plan to attend more shows coming up.

Does this mean the end of my taping this band?

Do you think they will continue to single me out?

I mean c'mon I am not that important in the whole scheme of things?

I need some help from this board?

Am I looking for some advice from this great community on where to go from here?

Where there is a will there is a way.

Show me the way?

please?

here is my advice... just buy the pearl jam live releases for $10 and keep your sanity...

if you are getting the personal frisk, bringing gear is not an option while solo.... now if your old lady was with you, that is another thing...

Wow. I'm going to assume he is with the band.

Just buy the live releases and rock the hell out at the show.  :)

Wow that sucks.  I'd just write off taping PJ for a while.  Just go to the shows and have a good time.

Thats suprised me that he spotted you for a second time and remembered your face.  :o

I would change your appearance a little or just don't tape PJ for a while.

What a shame you've been busted twice by the same guy, never heard anything like that before...

id tell that dude how flattered you were that he drove all that way to personally frisk you.  or, on the other hand, tell him that stalking you is against the law and his advances are not welcome.

since when is Pearl Jam anti-taping?

how about you have someone else tape the show if you feel you're a "marked man"?

Honestly, if Pearl Jam is okay with taping..  I'd complain as loudly as possible and ask to see managers or bosses and have them clarify things.

If you're stealthing you're mostly screwed and you probably need to have someone else tape the show and you need to stop dressing like you have something to hide or don't fit the "taper profile" or whatever.

Wait a sec. Let me get this straight. PJ is playing big venues, you see the guy at one particular gate, and you go in anyway? Couldn't you have just walked to a different entrance? This is a regular part of the stealth game isn't it, to pick to attendant that is the most likely to submit to the Jedi ways? Not to say even if you did get in, it sounds like they might be really looking for tapers on this tour (out in the crowd).

BFT,

I got your pm and here's my thoughts.

Don't in anyway try to tape Pearl Jam the rest of this tour. I know as a taper it is tough to take a night off. I get offended when anyone asks me to take a night off. But IMO, if you do risk taping another show while this security personnel is looking for you and you get busted again, it will leave a huge negative impact on anyone else that tries to tape Pearl Jam in the future. Much like the way I do not support video tapers and IEM tapers of audio-friendly bands that just bring bad attention to the people that are playing by the rules.

I know it's tempting to try to beat this asshole, but just let him win this one for the sake of the rest of the tapers.

Because all the dates are in big markets (since they shut out everything south of DC), I'm sure high quality audience tapes are being made at most of the shows esp SF.

I'm not sure if I would confront this guy about it either and show him up with PJ's lame taping policy. It just gives him more reason to remember you if he's still doing this on the next tour.

Or print out the taping policy, bring it to the show, and shove it in his face the next time.

Their policy is rather restrictive.  To paraphrase it "You can record with a tin-can on a piece of wax string".

not sure if that satisfies the "internal mics only" clause in the taping policy...

i would skip out on taping as well for the sake of other tapers.  also, if you get popped again, you might get banned from several PJ shows in the future (depending on who exactly busted you).  not worth the risk.

Shoot.... I'd just give you gear to your friend to bring and and hit up the next shows.  Heck, you can probably bring it in yourself... Most venues have more than one entrance if you need to bring it in yourself.  It's not like this guy is going to be walking the venues looking for you once you get in.  This sounds more like a challenge  to me.

After BFT's first post after he got busted at the LA Forum, alot of people here told him 'ah shake it off, it's not like anyone's going to be looking for you at the next show'. Then see what happened.

Again my advice, just sit the rest of the tour out, the shows will get taped and you won't risk leaving an even worse impression of tapers on whoever this security guy is that appears to be traveling with the band.

Just relax & enoy the shows.  If nothing else, skip a few shows, try to always pass near that security guy, & relax if he searches you repeatedly.  After a few times, he'll figure you gave up, & then you can try again if you want.

But, as George has said, it's a pretty sure thing that all the shows will be taped, so it may be best just to relax & not worry about taping.

yeah since i am a pearl jam club member and all my tickets go thru will call--I feel my name is up in lights--so I ask everyone this question:

Will I be able to tape pearl jam down the road at some point--maybe not this tour but in the future?

I just feel since they got my name and wrote it down that I might be stuck for quit a while

your thoughts are very much welcomed, i thank you all

This same situation happened to a couple of guys I know who taped U2 last year. They both got busted in Philly on the fall leg and U2's main security guy(I think his name is Maverick?)remembered one of them for the rest of the tour. If he saw him at other shows, he made a point to stand near him for 4 or 5 songs to see exactly what he was up to. I agree with other people here saying to just forget about taping Pearl Jam for awhile. It is not worth the hassle/headaches/trouble to even mess around with sneaking stuff in and worrying yourself sick for 2 hours.

Damn, U2 security must love Philly. I got gear confiscated at 5/22/05 Philly by Steve Matthews, the managing principal of Principle Management. For 10/16/05, I blocked for two other tapers and had these security type guys standing no more than 2 ft. from them staring right at their faces for about 2-3 minutes during the show like the scenario you just described. Both times were inside the ellipse. For 10/17, 3 of us rolled outside the ellipse with the usual no hassles.

I don't know... maybe it is just me.  I really doubt they are assigning someone to the gate to look out for you.  If so they probably have black helicopters searching the parking lot also.   :P  I still say have your friend bring the gear in to be safe and then record.

You're using 4022's and an R1, traveled all over the country following my favorite band around for 3 weeks and then had to deal with the same kind of busting I did last year with U2. The thanks entirely goes to you.

Take in just your R-1 and stand there and hold it and use the internal mics? That seems to satisfy their taping policy.

And carry a copy of the policy.
