Topic: Gear Bag recommendations?

Okay, a newbie question.  I'm running Church cards (STC-11) > ST-9000 > Edirol R-09.  I've been lugging my gear around in an old laptop bag, but would like to get a top open gear bag.

Hear is what is in my bag:

Pelican 1020 (R-09)
Pelican 1010 (STC-11 plus SP-BMC-2 plus lav clips)
ST-9000 preamp
Tensimounts (2)
7.5" t-bar
5/8" quick connect
13" flexible mic extension
6" flexible mic extension
F-M 1/8" extension cable (6 ft)
M-M 1/8" extension cable (3 ft)
Windtech C-clamp
batteries
small tools + flashlight
cable wraps (velcro and cable ties)
roll of gaffer's tape
misc. stuff (ie, earplugs, pen, paper)

I've been looking at the Lowepro Nova 4 and think it should be big enough but thinking a Nova 5 might be better.  I've also seen a nice Canon bag similar in size to the Nova 4 but has zipper pockets on each side in addition to the one in the front.

I highly recommend the lowe pro bags.
It's all I have used so I can't speak for other bags but if you plan on recording outside or in a bar that gets rowdy
the lowe pro series will treat you well.
The only think I can suggest between a 4 and 5 is if you think you might switch up to different equipment in the future than you may want to go with the bigger bag.
I was using a lowe pro magnum and I outgrew it and now use a lowe pro commercial.

I recently acquired a Nova 5AW and that thing is huge. I've been carrying a Nova 1 and while it's a tight fit I get a UA5, two DVD batts, JB3, 2 optical cables, Beyer or Berliner mics, Avantone SSH mounts, a small t-bar, 2 small windscreens, a 6" flexible extension and a Windtech C-clamp in the main compartments. I hang my cables off the side (or leave them on the stand), a roll of gaffers tape on the shoulder strap and still have earplugs, note pad, pen, sharpie, adapters and attenuators in the side pockets. I wish I could fit all that in a smaller bag but that isn't going to happen. May be time to look for an all-in-one box. If you want plenty of room for future expansion, give the Nova 5 some serious thought, and at $45 for one, that's a steal; doubt you'll ever find a better deal on one.

I noticed M-Audio has a line of gig bags that could be useful.
There's one specially made for the microtracker ta boot.

Thanks for the feedback.  The Nova 5 in YS doesn't have dividers.  I'd have to scope out the cost of some dividers before I pulled that trigger.  I think I can get one on ebay new for $58 free shipping.

The Canon one I was talking about is the 200DG.



Nova 4: Size (Interior):  11.5W x 6D x 7.75H in.
Nova 5: Size (Interior):  14W x 6D x 8.5H in.
Canon 200DG: 10.5 x 7 x 7.5 inches (WxDxH)

So, the Canon seems similar in size to the Nova 4, but has two side zippered pockets instead of the mesh pockets on the Nova 4 that I think ends up giving you more room than the 4 if you have misc. stuff.  The Canon also has some straps on the bottom that you could attach your stand to instead of carrying it separately.

Interesting.  It may be down to the Canon 200DG or the Nova 5.

i think the Nova 5 would be overkill for the size and amount of gear you have

that canon bag looks pretty sweet but i'd check to see if it has any type of rain cover like the Nova bags - very nice feature in case you ever get caught taping in the rain or have to transport gear your gear while its raining

the smaller the footprint the better imo and you can always sell the bag and upgrade when you do get more gear

my buddy runs a nova4 with ua-5/jb3 and pelican case for mics and still has some room

you may be able to get all that in a Nova 3 even

The Canon bag has a cover that is all weather - comes over the sides and velcros and clips and looks similar to the Nova bags.

I guess I'll go Nova 4 or the Canon 200DG.  I'll figure out later if I can go smaller.
