Noob L-R Channel Mixing Question
« on: April 01, 2007, 06:57:41 PM »
OK, first of all I know - you gotta play with it and see what sounds good.

But I wanted to get some feedback on this because my computer really grinds on processing a 24/96 file so ...

I have a recording where somebody got *really* chatty all of a sudden for a coupla minutes.  I am normally a pretty low key taper as long as you don't kick my stand, but this guy - I was on the verge of telling him to shut up or move along - something I;ve never done - when luckily he decided to move along.

So I have a section where I would like to reduce this guys boring conversation.

This seems feasible because I was running XY and the chat is mostly in the left channel.  So I figure given the mic config, I should be able to mix in some right channel without being too noticeable.

So my question is any recommendations on how to do this smoothly?

I am using CEP 2.  I don't think?  it really allows me to do a gradual mix, so I was thinking maybe start some period of time before blabber guy shows up, and gradual increase the mix % of right into left, up to some level (maybe 40% R 60% L) during this guy's life story and then after he splits back out of the mix until I am back to the original tracks.

Any better way to do this in CEP.  General comments?

Thanks - this is really the first time I've tried to do anything in post, I generally avoid it.

Personally, I'd probably just leave it alone.  But, if you want to make the transition smoother, do the following:

  • open the WAV in CEP/Audition's multitrack view
  • copy/paste and align the chatty portion into a separate channel, to which you'll apply your channel mixing
  • ensure there's overlap between the non-chatty and chatty portions *
  • crossfade the overlapping sections
  • export to WAV / dither, etc. as necessary

* Like this:

    NON-CHATTY PORTION                        NON-CHATTY PORTION
[------------------------]                [------------------------]
                     [------------------------]
                           CHATTY PORTION

Thanks.  I cut out a 5 minute section of the wave so I could play around with a lot of different strategies in a short period of time.  The step-in step out method seems to work pretty well, I'll try crossfades too - should work better, I just have to dig into CEP more, I bought it and never use it for anything but dither.

I always archive my raw wavs anyway so, no harm in doing a few remixes.
