Sorry if this is a total n00b question, but I just received my CA 9200 preamp and I'm wondering how to use it, and what settings would offer a good starting point when used with the Sony PCM-M10 and CA CAFS mics?
Before receiving the preamp, I taped a couple shows by plugging the CAF mics directly into the PCM-M10 with the volume mic level set at 1 to avoid distortion.
Here's how I have the preamp connected:
CAF Mics into the 9200 input.
Accessory cable from the 9200 output to the mic input on the PCM-M10.
9200 gain: ?
9200 Volume: ?
What kind of shows are you taping? Loud rock? Quiet stuff? Far away or close up?
For loud shows

Preamp output always at max. * this is only good for really quick adjustment in the field * or when you need to attenuate a signal like going into a camera.
Gain settings from 0 db for very loud stack taping. To +15 for really loud but distant recording.
For quiet shows
Line in.
output at max.
Gain at +25 to +40 db.
If you are going 24 bit try and aim for -12 to -10 db of level on your vu meter. If you cant always watch if if you can watch the levels go for -10 to -5 At peeks.
Remember as with any omni they are much more sensitive to low end and they are much more likely to need less overall gain because of this.
