Title: any replacement due for the Zoom H4n? Rumors?
Post by: kenyee on May 12, 2012, 05:42:28 PM
Anyone hear any rumors of a replacement for the H4n?  The H4 was released way back in 2008...H4n in 2009...seems overdue w/ all the new competitors :-)

Zoom sucks.

Was an early H4 adopter. Should have read about it on taperssection first, but was not yet aware of this board.....

LOL.  Compared to the competition now, no doubt.

That's why I was hoping something new is on the horizon since everyone else has raised the bar for how clean the sound should be :-)

Despite the harder competition, the zoom brand is still strong in low budget applications (I own an Olympus LS-5 that I've let some people borrow to use as a bit bucket on DSLR shoots, and they all seem to refer to it as a Zoom, as if it's a synonym for recorder). Despite the low quality, it's a pretty flexible unit and pretty good for hobby musicians and journalists.

I don't think it's going to be replaced for at least a few years.

I guess you could say the same for the term "Bit Bucket". As far as I know the Olympus LS-5 does not have a digital input, so it could not be used as a "Bit Bucket"  A "Bit Bucket" is a device that accepts and records or copies a digital stream that is sent from some sort of analog to digital device (ADC), kind of like a holding bucket for data stream bits. The LS-5 is used as a recorder and records a digital recording, but it is not a bit bucket. So I think you mean that you use it as a digital recorder along with a DSLR.

I would look at the Olympus LS-100 or the Edirol R-26, myself.
