ZOOM H4n
« on: April 21, 2009, 01:20:05 PM »
Hello all,

Is there anyone on this list with a zoom H4n, using XLR preamps with condenser mics? ... for recording quiet stuff, not concert taping...
I´m thinking about getting one of this for all-around taping, soundscape stuff, tired of lug around a MT1+preamp+rycote,
for this kind of set-up you've to plan everything in advance, and it's kind of big...
Also anyone used the MS internal matrix of the H4n on the field... with card+fig8?

Thank you,
CS

Thanks,

But I knew already those threads, but I found them very music taping oriented, I was trying to find someone that uses it in the field for quiet sounds and soundscape...

I think I'm going to take the plunge, for this price point nothing beats it (PCM-50 lacks XLR)...

Anyway thanks for your help,

Best,
CS

I use Zoom recorders for soundscapes. Just got my H4n yesterday. More to follow...

Hi footralf,

Very good news :D, I'll be waiting for your tests, if you please could give some insights about on your experience with it, I'll be recording in the same kind of situations you usually photograph, abandoned or active industrial sites, large interiors and exteriors, by the way my congratulations on your imagery, and wonderfull material, those panorama cameras...

best,

by the way my congratulations on your imagery

Thanks. But since this forum is more about sounds, here's a quick link to some of mine. Just added two new ones, tonight:

I have just put a message on the Zoom forum with links to a set of recordings I've made tonight with the H2, H4, and H4n:

Thanks, Ralf, for the side-by-side comparison of all three Zoom recorders. To me, the H4n sounds a lot better than the H4, and somewhat better than the H2.

In my tests with external mics, I liked the result when using the 1/8-inch TRS input on the back of the H4n better than the result via the XLR inputs.  What's your opinion?

Hi Ralf,

Heard your recordings with internal mics, and the H4n clearly takes the lead.

Flintstone: which external mics you used for XLR? and which one for 1/8? When you say better results, you
mean less noise, better dynamics?

Same mics, Rode NT1A.

For the 1/8-inch input, I used a battery box to power the mics.
For the XLR input, I tried using the H4n's phantom power as well
as the battery box. The 1/8-inch input had considerably less noise.

It's too bad that Zoom put the 1/8-inch input on the back of the
recorder.  This makes it awkward to put the recorder down on a
table when a cable is attached there.  A mini-tripod helps.
