Took the 1080 HDV plunge
« on: November 21, 2005, 03:55:47 PM »
Just ordered the new Sony HVR-A1U

and a slew of other video goodies, not only for taping but also for documentary and other video production.

I'm going to try and work with several artists to get their permission to shoot a show and an interview in HD and post them online at the archive in HD.

If anyone else takes the HD plunge let me know so we can work the multi-cam thing.

I should have the camera on Wednesday so expect som samples.

peace, chris

Chris,

Can you encode in HD?  And along the same lines - if so, can you author HD DVDs?  What progs will you be using for these projects?

yes you can encode in HD, I'm using AVID Xpress HD for editing and compression to 1920x1080 30p MPEG-2 or 1920x1080 30p MPEG-4 AVC, you can also use Premier Pro to export to WMVHD.

Even downsampling to 720x480 16:9 progressive DVD will look great and maximize the quality you can get out of a DVD.

Pretty much no one can author HD DVDs yet, yet alone playback one. Distribution of HD content has a ways to go besides cable/sat, and who knows what's going to happen with the whole BluRay-HDDVD format war.

FCP can author HDDVDs, the spec is out so authoring compliant titles is not difficult

VERY interesting. if i may ask, are there any special players required to play back HDDVDs? last i knew, basically a "media computer" was needed to playback HD video files.

also, i hope you have a sweet computer to do the HD editing. i've read that it hogs up memory like a beast.  ;D

+T on the step up to HD!

Four months later, and now the answer is YES... LOL! Just as of a few days ago, the players are finally available...

btw - here is a clip I did from a Glen Phillips concert with the A1U and a PD-150:

it's in quicktime mp4, but 704x400 res, so it still looks pretty nice:
