taking my annual stab at setting up Linux on my old K6/II box. Got mandrake 9.2 downloading, and am going to give it a shot after running redhat 7.0 and previously, 6.2. the box has had windows server 2003 on it so i'm starting fresh.
i already have audacity and k3b downloaded, anyone else want to point me to some Open Source software links?? (not necessarily recording-related)
-
http://gaim.sourceforge.net
;D
-
yes... i was looking for a trillian-type messaging client, thanks!
-
cooker I just did this myself :P Do you have the resources to run version 10? It's much better then 9.2 IMHO, it's using the new 2.6 kernel which is really much FASTER!

Trillian can only hope to one day be as good as gaim. It'll never happen, tho. ;)

downloading 10 now...time to upgrade the old 9.0 ftp server.
I also really like the hd installls of Knoppix(though with 3.2 I could never get it to take a static ip)
last night we completely re-did our(me and my best friend who lives next door) firewall/infrastucture.
instead of 2 subnets behind 2 different firewalls, both sub-nets are now behind 1 Smoothwall pc...freed up a machine, better cable management, more responsive and tighter security

www.opera.com
eroaster
vcdimager
xiamian evolution
openoffice.org
binary news reaper (BNR2)
audacity
www.rpmfind.net
those are the things i can think of, I have been running Redhat on the desktop for as long as i can remember.
-
Ardour
- Audio multitracking software--very nice
Audacity
- Same kinda thing as Ardour, dunno which I like more.
cdparanoia-III-alpha9.8
- Like EAC, only Linux
XMMS
- Like Winamp, only Linux
Kopete
- Like Trillian, I prefer this one, it's KDE's--great integration with MSN and Yahoo for me.
Netscape 7.1
- I had Konqueror that came with KDE but it's SLOW SLOW SLOW compared to Netscape Navigator.. it seemed to lag, Netscape flies. I would think Mozilla would be just as good but I can't get it to see my GTK+ libraries :angry3:
Americas Army
- Really fun game ;D I'm a sucker for first person shooters and this is one of the best around which is cool enough to have both linux and mac os ports.. it's free to d/l and play and a lot of fun ;D
Guarddog
- Good linux Firewall
Knomad
- Can connect my JB3 to transfer files but currently only USB 1.0 :(
-
considering version 10 now, although i've just spent two days downloading 9.2 ... :(
-
is linux self explanatory somewhat, like windows? i'd be interested in trying it out but know nothing about it. i should have a spare computer here shortly and would like to test it out.
-
far from self-explanatory!! but, mandrake's install process is as easy as windows.
i have abandoned linux more than once before because i hit a wall... this time i need some real knowledge for work...
-
Cooker, I'm buying blanks tomorrow, if you want I can mail you the three disks all setup.
Simp, the install on 10 is pretty easy--given your computer is pretty linux compatable (search google for your hardware and linux compatibility). Most all modern PC's are fine.
For Mandrake 10 I burned the .iso files via Nero, when done with the three I rebooted to the CD-Rom (disk 1 of 3) and it booted directly to a GUI (graphic interface) and you point and click your way to a new OS (select drive/partition to install on, etc.).
We should have a Linux forum ;D
-
i should have the iso's downloaded by the time i get home today. thanks for the offer Nick, +T
-
mission accomplished! posting this via Mandrake 10.0 / Mozilla
-
any glaring bugs you noticed?
I'm 90% done downloading...
-
I find that "Find Files" crashes a lot.. nothing major!

open up a terminal window and type in
#locate -U updates locate DB
#locate filename
or
#locate *.flac

installed 10 lastnight...major pain.
had to run the install *5* times before it would get through without any errors installing packages. sorry, but this is unacceptable.
never had any probems like this with installing Mandrake before.
I cant believe they removed the "test" feature of XFree from within the install.
have to manually edit my XFree config files tonight so I can get X to work with my vid card(matrox millenium). the install said 1600x1200 resolution at 24bit was supported by my card but I know for a fact that it isnt...it only has 2MB ram onboard, not to mention it is a PCI card!
if I cant get it to work correctly(not that I need X for my ftp server) I'll drop back to Debian.
-
yeah i had major problems with my matrox millenium and red hat years ago... that card is currently sitting in a box at my old employer...
-
this card has had no problems with other distros, including Mandrake 7.0 -> 9.2(with the same XFree86 version)!
-
I had a spare box here at work and decided to 'experiment'. I downloaded a Knoppix disc which I highly recommend to any Linux newbie. You can actually boot from the CD and be running Linux without installing anything. It's a good way to sample it and see what it's all about (as well as checking hardware compatibility). I ended up permanently installing it (very easy and smooth process) which makes it a Debian setup.
The machine is pretty slow - 128MBRAM, 450mHz processor. Any suggestions for something fun to do with it?
Check out these links for more Knoppix info:

Screw Linux. I've tried installing Mandrake 3 times now today. The 2nd time it almost got the whole way through installation and just hung. I hit reset and could boot into windows via lilo but not linux (not surprised). 3rd time it hung while trying to read the partitions on the drive I sorta had linux installed on. I'm installing it on it's own hard drive. Now my boot sector is fucked up on my main drive and all I get are 99's when it accesses my boot sector. I'll never install Linux again unless it's on a dedicated machine.
EDIT: So booting off the XP CD and typing "fixmbr" fixed my problems. Maybe I'll try again if that's all I need to do, but this is sooooo aggravating.
-
if you have a floppy boot disc you can use that to boot up and then type "fdisk /mbr" and it will fix your problem
-
i actually have a floppy disk w/ dr. dos on it, and "fdisk /mbr" in the autoexec, from the last time i had a linux install go south.
-
*sigh*
Well I actually managed to get the dual boot working :). Now I'm trying to install mythtv... and this thing is taking a loooong time to compile. Oh well. One bug I'm noticing is that if I load up the hardware manager or MCC and I move my mouse I'm fucked. Mouse completely stops responding. So now I have to wait for mythtv to compile and then logout or reboot. *sigh*
BTW, This forum (http://forums.scotsnewsletter.com/index.php?s=501f1460ab62c4ec8f5df7d7ca2cd4a0&act=SF&f=14) has a lot of useful Linux information. The stickies helped me figure out quite a few things.
-
I'm running mandrake 9.2 and loving it. Working on getting a bittorrent setup going. If anyone is running a bt tracker on linux let me know. As for linux linx, http://www.linuxquestions.org/ (http://www.linuxquestions.org/) is a good resource.
-
Linux is tha bomb, yo! ;)
As soon as I get some cash, I'm gonna get a Micro-ATX PC and set it up with Freevo (http://freevo.sf.net) - of course on top of Debian. Might be a while before I get that cash, tho. ;D
-
I've been running Mandrake 9.2 and I'm already itching for something different. I've heard good things about Slackware... I think that's going to get installed next.
If you're running kde, check out:
www.kde-apps.org
www.kde-look.org
How does freevo compare to mythtv?
-
I'm sure they're very similar. I have a friend who runs freevo, so I'm inclined to run it as well...
Slackware is definitely nice. ;D
-
Hey cooker, why don't you update your original post with all of the links everyone's mentioned and make it the "official ts linux thread" :)? Or I could start a new thread if you don't want to do it.
-
will do. i'm struggling with getting VNC working so i don't have to keep switching this monitor cable....
-
Why not buy a KVM switch so that you can use the same keyboard, monitor and mouse between the two machines? Probably a lot easier than using VNC.
If Mandrake is the popular choice then www.mandraeuser.org might be useful. I tend to visit www.pclinuxonline.com regularly as well.
I've been a Mandrake user for 4-5 years now and haven't changed my boot manager to point at Windows again since then. I'll be moving over to Knoppix just as soon as I get it to stop hanging cos of the wlan card.
-
KVM would work, although with VNC workin' i could put th e linux box in the closet....
thanks for the links, +T. Why move to Knoppix, Ross?
-
"Why move to Knoppix, Ross? "
apparently you havent experienced the wonders of apt-get
:D :D :D
-
I'm moving to Knoppix at some point because I've been using Linux for long enough now that I don't need my hand held so much by Mandrake. I think Mandrake is a great distro but I rarely, if ever, use any of its custom built tools, preferring to use vi and the config files instead.
Also, apt-get. Mmmmm! Although urpmi is a step in the right direction the Mandrake dependancy lists are horrendous! Trying to install or uninstall one simple program brings about 100Mb of dependancies. I want to move to something bit leaner and easier to keep up to date.
-

What kind of problems are you having? I got it working right away, with the VNC that came with the distro.
-
RossHenry, Knoppix isn't "leaner" in that you dont have a say as to what gets installed.
you can always un-install programs though. . .
-
You're right in that the install is not really a lot more lean, but with a hd install you get debian which can be stripped down to bare essentials much more easily than Mandrake. As I said before, I find the Mandrake dependancy lists hellish to work with and that counts for both installing and uninstalling. Sure, I could just use --nodeps but that's just forcing it to do what I want. I'd rather try and get a system that doesn't argue with me so much!
Oh, and many thanks for my first T, cooker!

i installed tightvnc because it didn't seem like i had a vnc server installed (typing vncserver did nothing for me, port 5900 wasn't accepting connections) and now the server will initialize, but i can't connect to it from other machines..
i'm throwing down the guantlet tomorrow, leaving the linux box plugged in to the monitor when i leave for work, forcing the wife to use it.

tightvnc is a package in mandrake. No need to install it yourself.
-
yeah I installed it via the package loader...
-
anyone know why during installing redhat 9 my comp keeps locking up during the "spell check" package. i ran the md5s before burning the .ISOs it has done it 3 times and i cant figure out how to not install it. i am a good speller!
edit: nevermind, got it figured out. disc had an error on it.

well i hit the next wall. everything works fine except my video card. the screen goes blank when linux starts to boot the graphical interface. i am using this on an old machine with an ATI Rage Pro AGP integrated video card. during the installation it recognized my card fine and installed the mach64 drivers, but maybe these are the wrong drivers. i have searched and searched the internet to find a way to correct this but to no avail. can anyone help me with this? i have 0 linux experience.

try running xconfigurator if you have it. if not there is a file generally located @ /etc/X11/XF86Config. I would try lowering the resolution to 800x600 to start w/ since most monitors like that at any refresh rate.
Section "Screen"
Identifier "Screen0"
Device "Videocard0"
Monitor "Monitor0"
DefaultDepth 16
SubSection "Display"
Depth 16
Modes "800x600"
EndSubSection
EndSection
also for the monitor
Section "Monitor"
Identifier "Monitor0"
VendorName "Monitor Vendor"
ModelName "Unknown monitor"
HorizSync 31.5 - 37.9
VertRefresh 50.0 - 70.0
Option "dpms"
EndSection
and video card sections
Section "Device"
Identifier "Videocard0"
Driver "ati"
VendorName "Videocard vendor"
BoardName "ATI Mach64"
EndSection
attach your config here if you would like me to take a look at it
edit: These config examples are from a compaq dl360 running Redhat Eterprise 3 w/ the onboard video adapter plugged into a crappy LCD/keyboard drawer.

I always had problems trying to run X in less than 1024x768.
well, not problems as it ran smoothly, but every distro I tried defaulted window size for a 1024x768 resolution, making it next to impossible to reach some dialog buttons or to manually resize windows via max/restore/min
-
thanks for the help but i got fed up with that real quick and decided to just pull that HD out, put it in my main machine and run a dual boot box. everything is running fine except i can't get the damn ethernet card configured properly to work through our router.
-
/sbin/ifconfig -a and netstat -r are your friends.
/sbin/ifconfig eth0 192.168.1.10 mask 255.255.255.0
route add default 192.168.1.1
make sure /etc/resolv.conf is cool
nameserver ns1.xxxxxxx.com
nameserver ns2.xxxxxxx.com
other than that i need a little more info
-
here's a link to the thread i started over at another msg board, notice the similarities?
http://www.linuxquestions.org/questions/showthread.php?s=&threadid=169393
i got one response but it didn't help much. +t for trying to help.
-
send the results of the following commands
ifconfig -a
netstat -r
route -na
ping 192.168.0.1
-
also
mii-tool -v
or
mii-diag -v
-

-

I'm getting ready to try Fedora Core 3 on my PC. If it works alright I'm going to turn it into a Freevo box. ;D
-
John, re: Freevo, it only supports certain video chips.
-
John, re: Freevo, it only supports certain video chips.
Yeah I know. Mine's supported.
I'll probably try MythTV too, just to see what I like better.

heres a cool link, great reading

great link - that should go in the archival forum.

Cooker, I've been pondering moving to Linux on my laptop (perhaps for 24/96 recording) but was wondering what you've been reading / liking. I've had older versions of Red Hat, Mandrake, FreeBSD, the whole spectrum.... but was wondering what seems to be the best for multimedia?? Suggestions?

I'd probably go with something like Gentoo. Distros like Mandrake and Red Hat (now Fedora) come with way too much stuff if all you want to do is audio. Plus I really like Gentoo. ;D
-
another good link thats helping me out alot
sorry i probably shouldnt have posted that last link as its part of mandrakesoft and Im not sure if its cool with them
-
Haven't looked at Gentoo - might have to check that out. i'll probably throw Mandrake down on my main desktop because i have it, and because it's the most wife-friendly, but i would probably recommend Debian to a user such as yourself who has plenty of experience with Linux.

If you are looking for any (all all possibly) Linux audio apps look no further than:

It will keep you busy for weeks. . . ;)
