Wavelab 5.01a Invert Phase in Montage
« on: September 12, 2009, 02:55:15 PM »
Is it just me or does Wavelab not have an option to invert the phase
in a montage?

I'm doing a 4 track mix (2 ambient, 2 sbd) via a montage and I'd sure
like to be able to apply a phase inverter on the fly.  Curently the only
way I can do this is open a stereo track > highlight > Process > Invert
Phase > Wait for it > Save it > Wait for it.  Then reopen the montage.

It'd sure be a hell of allot faster to do this on the fly via a plugin.

This should do what your wanting
http://www.voxengo.com/product/pha979/

Direct link for download
http://www.download3k.com/DownloadLink1-Voxengo-PHA-979.html

Can you explain why one would want to do this?  It seems that shifting different frequencies by different time amounts is going to mess up the sound, right?  Imagine a square wave.  If you shift different frequencies by different time amounts, the wave is going to look quite different.  Certainly it is not going to be a sharp edge.

Also, I noticed the download 3k link you gave makes no mention of the cost of the software.  Pet peeve of mine, you download something, thinking it will be free, and it is either a demo, or needs to be activated.  May or may not contain a virus as well.

All said, Voxengo is a great site, with lots of free plugins, but their prices are pretty high it seems.

What is meant by the phase shift here is simultaneous shifting of all frequencies across the active frequency range of the signal by the given value in degrees.  This is achieved by linear-phase design.

PHA-979 can be very useful during mixing sessions, especially when working with the sound material recorded through an array of microphones.  In many cases this allows you to solve various phasing problems arising from the microphone placement chosen during the tracking session.  In other cases this process may help you to align drums to each other and to align the bass to drums and other instruments bringing punch and time coherence not attainable by the ordinary time-aligning alone.

I believe this plugin can be used indefinitely in demo mode with 100% functionality

That is just cut from their webpage.  I want someone to explain it to me...

While I'm sure others can provide a more technical explanation than I,
I'll provide an example of where I've found it useful.

I ran a four channel aud tape for a Derek Trucks show.  Each set of
mics sound balanced and look balanced in wav form and panning but
with a matrix of the sources everything became panned hard to one
side and wav forms were now unbalanced.  Inverting the phase on
one source, before doing the matrix, solved that problem.

Thats the best free tool I've found for fixing phase.

You should be able to have all your tracks open in montage, click on the box to the left that says no fx, and apply this plug in to just that montage.

I've not had a chance to try either of those plugins yet, hopefully soon.

Thanks for the links.

In a Wavelab montage you actually have to go back and invert the phase on the source file.  Just right click the file that you want to invert on choose SOURCE|EDIT, then once the source file opens make sure the entire file is highlighted and choose PROCESS|INVERT PHASE and save the file.  No plug in needed.

In the montage, just use the ToolsOne effect.  This has an invert button.  I'm guessing this is one of the VST plugins that comes with Wavelab, and not an add-on.
