Help Laptop won't read files it has written to DVD
« on: November 30, 2010, 04:36:52 PM »
Pat,

My laptop use to read and write files to cd's and DVD's just  fine. However, now it won't read files it has written to DVD. It will burn the files to DVD but it won't read them. I can read the DVD files on other machines but not on the machine that burned them. Further, it no longer reads older DVD files that it use to read. I can't get it to read a file from a DVD.

It will burn and read all files written on cd.

Also, it has no problem playing movies on DVD's. It just won't read files on DVD.

Thoughts?

Can it read a stamped DVD, such as a movie disc or commercial software on a DVD-ROM?

Is the lens dirty?

Otherwise, I'd suspect the drive itself. Is it removable (like the T-series ThinkPads), or built into the machine?
