FLAC Bug: Important to be aware of!!!!
« on: June 16, 2004, 11:36:38 AM »
Hey all-

Mirth posted in the What the FLAC? thread about having a problem with FLAC encoding WAV's to all static. Also I have heard of some other people occasionally having problems.

I think sometimes FLAC installs wrong. When I first switched over to FLAC from APE I did some testing. I took 16/44.1 WAV files and did the following

1) WAV>SHN (generate MD5)
2) WAV>FLAC>WAV>SHN (generate MD5)

then I manually compared by eye the MD5's which should have been the same. Much to my surprise the MD5's were NOT the same, indicating that FLAC encoding was corrupting the original data!!!!     :o

So I  reinstalled FLAC from a different download source, after which it seemed to work fine, the MD5's from 1 and 2 were identical.   :)

I think the bad version I got from somewhere linked to the etree site, and that the version that worked I downloaded directly from Mike Wren's site. Just wanted to let everyone know about this, I think this is a good test just to make sure your version of FLAC is working correctly.

Take care,
Ben

Another problem I've had with FLAC have been that the resultant file was exactly the same size as the source WAV.

One thing to note is that all my recent issues with the software have been after I switched to using the latest CDWave as my recording app. Both instances were from files direct from CDWave, I don't *think* I've had problems encoding files that have seen post-recording edits in Wavelab. YMMV
Governor Jim McGreevey was equally disturbed about the upcoming population increase. "New Jersey cannot support all of these wookies," he said. "For starters, we don't have nearly enough kindbud. At best, we can muster up a Q.P. of some beasties, but we've not a dime-bag more."

and if you update to the lastest version of cdwave, you can just go straight flac as
your breaking your wav's up, thats what i do now, and only use frontend to fingerprint
my files now, it makes everything much easier and i have found no bugs or problems
with the flac encoder within cdwave

Beware using CDWave>flac with 24 bit files.
My experience is that the resultant files, though they will decode properly, will be about the same size as the originals.  This certainly defeats the purpose of a codec.
Using the flac frontend has proven quite reliable for both 16 & 24 bits files.
