iTune 4.6 now has gapless playback
« on: June 10, 2004, 12:03:12 PM »
I just downloaded the newest version 4.6 and was listening to a show I just converted to AAC and noticed that there was no gap in between tracks. I then went back and listened to a show that was converted on v 4.5 and low and behold there is no gap.  I was just talking today about how IMHO that was the only real flaw with iTunes.

I also posted this in the Team mac Geeks thread but figured you windows iTunes users would like to know.

I'm pretty sure gapless is impossible for mp3, did you try any other formats?

I have not tried a mp3 as I only put them to AAC. I'll see what a mp3 does. After I make one. Since my ipod only has AAC or apple lossless on it I'm happy.

The gaps are there for mp3 playback.  Looks like it's time to ditch mp3s for me. ;D

Thanks John I don't have any MP3 files that are shows so I couldn't try it out. I've been thinking about seeding shows in apple lossless just because.

If you do that remember to encode them in Quicktime, not in iTunes.  You lose a little bit of data encoding them in iTunes (according to tests Scott Brown ran when the format was first available).

So what did you do to get the gapless playback?  I just re-encoded a show into AAC and it still has gaps???

other way around.  the ones i did in iTunes were bit perfect.  when i had quicktime player decode, they weren't exact.  i submitted the bug to apple...

What's the current feeling towards Apple Lossless? Impressed? Pros and/or cons?

IIRC, it compresses about the same as FLAC.  I wouldn't switch to it full time though...  Maybe just for playing on an iPod.

And has *anyone else* gotten gapless playback out of their AAC files???  It doesn't work for me...

Sorry if I misread the thread, but can you get gapless playback on an iPod with the Apple Lossless format?
