Topic: Tracking onto a 3200 rpm drive...

Howdy All,

Picked up a 5 gb Seagate USB 2.0 pocket drive primarily for shuttling projects.  It's a 1 inch disk, 2Mb cache gadget the size of a peewee league hockey puck and twirls at a dizzying 3200 rpm.  Other forums warn that the advertised 480Mbps for USB 2.0 needs to be watched (i.e. sustained vs. peak).

Tinkering around last night, it proved able to keep up on a two track (16bit x 44.1khz) ditty.  I guess next will be to see if it'll handle 16 tracks and/or 24bit streams.  May need to twiddle with buffers & caches. 

Nothing imperative,  just yapping...

For last night's test:

MTV -> Home receiver -> {G4 PB (Line-in) & Digital Performer} -> Pocket Drive




I'll probably also try:

Motu Traveler -> (G4 PB FW400  & Digital Performer) -> Pocket Drive

MBox -> (G4 PB USB 2.0 & PT LE)  -> Pocket Drive

(2xEcho Laylas) -> Wintel  DAW (Quartz, N-Track, Cakewalk) -> Pocket Drive

I suspect the bugaboos will be on how a particular recording s/w dumps to disk (big blorf or manageable stream)...
 

Been wanting to replace my external 3.5" with a 2.5" HD to lighten the portable rig but if all of this works out, may think more of leapfrogging and to 1.0" drives.
