Backup nightmare
« on: March 13, 2006, 09:32:10 AM »
Not sure if this is the correct forum, but....
I bought an external HD on the weeked, usb caddy containing a 300gb IDE hard disk.
To cut a long story short, this disk died after copying 100gb of wavs, FLAC etc to it.
Windows just says "its corrupt and unreadable".
It may be possible that the stuff can be recovered with tools, for example

http://www.recovermyfiles.com/Recover_Deleted_File_Types.html

However the tools seem to be driven by file types, and not sure how many of the tools support FLAC.
Anyone any advice, or any tool recommendations?
Needless to say its all my fault, and there could be quite a number of my masters at risk  :(

Cheers

Norm

norm -- you indicate that you copied the files to your now fubar new drive.  Do you still have the originals?

If so, I'd simply return the drive and get a replacement.

No I dont, thats the clincher.
I deleted them from my original drive while I was defragging. the plan was to copy them back afterwards.
I figured it was minimal risk that the drive would go tits in the time frame. How wrong was I.
The ironic thing is , I only bought this drive as I figured I should have a backup.

I presume that you can't retrieve the deleted files from your old drive's recycle bin.

Have you written any data to the old drive?  If not and assuming that the deleted files are no longer in your recycle bin, could be worthwhile to look into software that would allow you to "undelete" files on your old drive.

I have a nasty habit of "shift and delete" which bypasses the recycyle bin. It was 100gb anyway which wouldnt have went in there.
I was defragging my old drive, which I think copies things about, which probably used quite a few of the used sectors.
There might be some room for undeleting some files though, I will investigate that. Thanks for the pointer.

I still think though, there are some files to be recovered from my new disk.
I should be looking at both options though, thanks.
I am going to run a recovery program on my new disk tonight, to see any possibility of recovering WAV files in the short term.
Will post any progress if anyone is interested.
