Need Some Advice About Transferring Old MD Shows to PC
« on: February 26, 2008, 06:41:18 PM »
So, I've got about 50 shows I recorded to MD back in 2002-2005 (60-120 minutes per show).  Most of them were seeded, but some never were.

What should I do at this point?  some options:
  • do the analog transfer (realtime re-recording on the PC)
  • get a portable MD that will allow digital transfer via USB (Sony RH1 or MZ-M200)
  • get a MD deck with optical out

New or used - I don't care. Whatever I do purchase, my old Sony MZ-N1 and all the MDs will be sold after I'm done converting.  I just want to get them to my PC without negatively effecting the sound quality.

PM me if you want to help with a digital transfer of some unseeded Beck shows:

I did a few MD transfers for someone. i did it like this.

md > rca/xlr > V3 > audiophile 24/96 sound card (or you could go directly into a harddisc recorder).

you could use any A/D converter.  it's gonna sound way better than a direct MD > pc via line in etc.

A deck with optical out is good unless they are Hi-MD.  If they are you must use the RH1 xfer.  The RH1 also will xfer legacy stuff that is recorded by you, i.e., no DRM.

I recently picked up a second hand Sony Minidisc Deck with optical output for £20 + shipping for exactly the purpose you described and have been converting my old MDs via my iRiver H120 optical input.  When I was looking for the deck on ebay there was plenty of choice and a lot of them seemed to be going at low prices.
