Wavelab 2GB file dealio query
« on: September 29, 2009, 06:31:14 PM »
I have a single set show from last week that is 2'15" long and recorded at 24/48.

Due to the 2GB file size limitation my R-44 split it up into two files, one 2'7" and another 8".  Using Wavelab 5 I CANNOT paste the two because of the 2GB file size limit.  I tried to SRC both from 48k>44.1k and it is still too big.  I thought "What the hell, I'll dither too" but when I put the 16/44.1 rendered product back together there is an audible blip.

Any other ideas on how to attack this?  The last option would be to split it at what would be a track mark, but a silent spot, and then SRC/Dither so the blip would be much less audible.

I'd love some ideas other than to switch my DAW software.

The 2gig limit is a file system limitation, not the daw app.

I don't use wavelab so I can't be specific, but it should be able to do what you are looking to do (just not save a file that large)

There's got to be some setting or option you have set wrong.

This is not entirely true.  Sure in FAT16 2GB is a limit, but most drives are formatted NTFS+ or otherwise.  Wavelab 5 will not let your audio file expand past 2 GB.  If you have a 2GB 24/48 file and add a bunch of gain, prompting the software to bring the file into a 32 bit domain it will complain...

The easiest option in Wavelab 5 in your situation is to split the 2GB file in applause or an encore break somewhere.  Then prepend the file to the your smaller existing file and dither separately and re-attach.  I've listened carefully to the re-attach point (in the applause) and never been able to hear it.

For what it is worth Wavelab 6 allows file sizes beyond the 2GB limit.

The problem with splitting and then dithering is that if the split is in the middle of music then you can hear it.  The trick is to get it to a quiet spot in between songs and split it there.

I thought that I remember about 5 or so years ago Damon doing some tests that showed problems with pasting together dithered tracks in Wavelab.

I haven't noticed the joins when I do them in a quiet spot or applause.  Also, if you join them at these spots you could use a short crossfade.  I don't find it necessary though.
