Title: Noob looking at Mics- Rode M5?
Post by: fendrin on January 03, 2016, 03:19:12 AM
A matched pair of Rode M5s are available at Guitar Center for $200. Is there a better product for a similar price point, and what does the used market for them look like? New to this culture, and on a serious budget. Can't really spend more than $250 on mics.

You might want to consider a pair of Line Audio CM3 mics as an alternative - I think they'd just be about within your budget

Seconded - you won't find a better bang for your buck.  Check the link to Team Line Audio in my signature for lots of samples and information.  A pair shipped from NoHypeAudio in Belgium (http://www.nohypeaudio.com/lineaudioproducts.htm) (where I bought mine) is 250 EUR, ~ $271 at current exchange rate.

For folks in the UK, Pink Noise Systems are the distributor for Line Audio Mics

I also got my Zoom F8 and most of my other recording gear from them - good guys (I've no affiliation with them BTW)

Nice to know that someone else is carrying this brand now.  NoHypeAudio appears to be about $45 cheaper for a shipped pair for USA buyers, but for UK customers it looks to be about the same (about 300 EUR from either vendor).

A used pair of Studio Projects C4 mics would be less than your budget and you get 2 pairs of capsules. Decent mics.

I have a set of Rode M5's, I don't use them all that much since I got my Busman BSC1's.  I just used both NYE...

Here's a few shows with the Rode M5...

I'm around Starved Rock State Park area.  Castle Theater gets tapers quite a bit for Old Shoe anyway.  Counting me there's usually 3 or 4.  My next show at Castle Theatre will be Rumpke Mountain Boys w/ Woodland Remedy 1/21.  I'm just now working on Old Shoe's set from NYE.  My Tinybox died so I only have the Rode M5 source for Old Shoe and for John Till's set I forgot to hit start the recorder but the preamp was running
