Okay, so my RockyGrass experiences show that the windscreens I have don't cut it in wind - duh, what mics come with actual windscreens (as opposed to pop screens)?
So...I'm wondering about LD windscreens for my 414s. I have two pairs of "pop" screens that do the trick indoors - the W414 (http://www.akgusa.com/Images/w414.jpg) and another set roughly the same without the plastic shell at the bottom - but need something beefier for outdoors. I found reference to Neumann WS 87 (http://www1.neumann.com/showparts.php3?ID=82&Artikel=Windscreen%20WS%2087) and WS 89 (http://www1.neumann.com/showparts.php3?ID=83&Artikel=Windscreen%20WS%2089), but couldn't find the dimensions to determine if they'll fit the AKGs. Anyone know if either of these will fit?
I know making a dead rat wraparound is an option, but would prefer not to go that route unless I don't have other good options. So...any recommendations?

I went with the Dead Rats, Brian. Granted, my XLS' are a different shape from your ULS' (square > round), so I can say much for the above Neumann screens. But the Rats do an efficient job and don't hurt the highs that bad at all. Cheap too. Can me made for as little as $5.00 in materials.

They look about the same to me. Anyway, thanks for the note on the dead rat option, I may still go that route yet.

not sure on dirty socks...might attract more w00ks :P ;D

I've used socks before in a pinch. They do a good job. But, they do look a little clumsy on the stand. I always wear socks to shows and throw some rubber bands in my bag as a back-up precaution. JIC, I forget the Rats I hate forgetting stuff, but sh*t happens. ;) :)

U87=56 mm wide (W87 designed for these)
U89=46 mm wide (W89 designed for these)
ADK TL=53 mm wide
414=50 mm wide
I have the W89's on my TL's. They were initially a very, very tight fit....but in the end I am satisfied. Due to the shape of the 414's, I'd think the u87's would work out better.

I am very happy with Neumann WS87’s on my B-uls’s.
I’ve used them under light wind outdoors a few times, but I’ve not
tested them in a full windstorm (red rocks) situation yet...
More to come eventually I guess.
