AKG 481 Best Set up for PA recording?
« on: October 28, 2004, 10:19:45 PM »
Hey there,

Anyone with experience could tell me if XY or ORTF are better for AKG 481's?

Also, If anyone likes the 63 hypercard cap indoors compared to the 61?

WISH THERE WAS A FIGURE 8 Capsule. Is there one?

Thanks,

Lyle

I'd choose none of the above.  I like DIN best with the 480s.  As to the 63s vs 61s, they are very similar except that the 63s are hypers.  What I mean by this is the characteristic sound of the different capsules are very similar, not like for instance the neumann ak50 hypers that have way less low end and are thus thinner sounding than the ak40 card caps.  The 63s as hypers will have a slightly more in your face sound since they record more of the direct PA sound and reject more of the room sound compared to the ck61s, but other than that the ck63 and ck61 caps will sound very similar.

as anything depends where. if you're raping the stack that's one thing, if you're dead center, 20 rows back, that's quite another. IMO the 63s are pretty much always better for indoors unless you're right up on the stacks.

Interesting about DIN. I know its a subjective thing. Doug Oade seems to believe this is not a good configuration for AKG mics with a loss of detail. He recommends this for "brighter" mics such as schoeps. You can read this on the Taper page of his site.

I will just need to try it and see what I like. Thanks.

Dont worry what he says. Taping is all about taste and experimentation. There are very few rules...

I run 480's (both ck1's and ck3's) and listened to him when I first got them and almost always ran them xy.  that being said I am much happier running them din or there abouts.  I use xy for onstage or stage lip most of the time.

DIN is the only way to fly with 480's IMO. 63's indoors & 61's FOB or outdoors will work everytime.
I know you like, tape for people's approval and stuff, and wave your tapes around like they're your dick...  but even you can't actually think section tapes from philips sound good.

yes I vote for DIN for 481/483's as well, I have only run XY once and ran very close to the stage, and my recordings just sounds weird to be honest, and that is the first and only time I have run that configuration, but I love the right angle DIN configuration; regarding caps I always run the 63 hypercards unless I am outside or in a very good acoustical environment with little chatter and background noise in which case the 62 omni caps would probably work better anyways
