will the SP CMC-4U work with JUST the R-09??
« on: February 12, 2008, 02:36:37 PM »
will pairing these mics http://www.soundprofessionals.com/cgi-bin/gold/category.cgi?item=SP-CMC-4U&type=store&template=specifications#
with JUST the r09 improve the sound quality of simple voice capture over that of the internal mics?
I know the pairing wont be able to handle high SPL's, but will the R09 power it well enough to warrant the purchase?
would there be another stereo pair better suited for pairing with just the R09?

thanks,
luke

I know Chris Church's mics can run off the plug in power of the R-09 and no distortion issues. You may want to give those a good look.

definently considering CA mics.  Will the AT 853's work with the plug in power from the r09?
SP website seems to think it will, but i would like to be sure first.

I've only run my 853's through an SP battery box or the CA ST-9100 pre, so I am not much help.  I do know the 853's will benefit from the "Church" mod to them so they won't distort.

For voice capture, you are unlikely to run into a problem with the mics distorting from high SPLs.  And the mics are most sensitive as provided in the most basic version offered by Sound Professionals.  If you end up wanting to tape louder stuff later, you can add the Church mod as needed, but for recording voices you are best served by the straight 2 wire setup, as you will need to add less gain that you would with modded mics or 3 wire power.

the answer is yes but to have the option to run higher SPL, either get the low sens mod by SP or just buy the cheaper CA mics from chris (similar quality though). for your use, you don't need the ATs and even if you started taping bands, etc. the CA mics are pretty comparable to the AT853's in quality (from what i have seen written). as long as you get the low sens mod AT853s which will be more money (CA mics are standard with it), you can run mic in, low gain and the plug in power will be more than adequate for soft and even loud/super loud, you might need to run the mic gain on high if the sounds are very soft but the noise shouldn't be to bad....i know for a fact that folks have run mic in, plug in power with the low sens mod or CA mic with no distortion/brickwalling.

good luck. if you will only be doing voice recording, not sure you need the AT853's they are pretty big...SP has cheaper mics that would work just as well and be much better than internals....CA is doing an internal mic mod to R9, check there is a thread in the retail section....

The SP mics are Audio Technica mics.  The MM are Sennheisers.  I have used them both running off the power supplied by the SONY MZ-RH1 minidisc and they worked just fine.  YMMV  From what I have read here, the CA mics are aimed at rock recording while the AT and Senn's can also perform quite well on music other than rock.  Will someone who knows from personal experience these mics fill us in??

Yes, it will work great.  I've done it a few times...  Here is a nice recording that was run that way.

I record jazz music, mostly acoustic, with SP-cmc 4u mics. Sometimes with a preamp, sometimes with mics straight to the mic in (plug in powered) of a Korg Mr-1. Never had troubles - actually I'm very happy.
