HD (AVCHD) > Mac ??? Camera advice
« on: January 29, 2013, 08:54:08 PM »
Few topics here...

can anyone point me in the right direction for if/how you can take avchd video from a memory card and edit it to dvd and/or avchd dvd at a higher bitrate?
I have seen mixed reports on if you can do it or if you can do it with any type of ease, ie import fast and easy, not have to waste tons of time converting to a format that can be edited.
tia

or is mp4 a better bet??
Mp4 isn't as high bit rate though - 24mbps vs 9 and the resolution isn't as high either
At least on the camera I was looking at, canon hf m500

Finally maybe a camera that does mp4 at higher rates??
The canon has mic in though hitch is huge to me
Edit, found the hf r40 which does 1080/24mpbs mp4

avchd straight out of the camera is already avchd disc and bluray compliant it would be the mp4 that would need recompressing.im not on a mac so i cant help there.

I use MPEG Streamclip to convert to ProRes, havent converted avchd with it, but its what most folks use and its free.

You can use log and transfer in FCP and Imovie to capture AVC footage as long as you preserve the file structure and all sub files on your memory card, in the background it will be converting the footage to prores and it takes alot of memory.  I think the most recent version of FCP edits AVC/MTS footage natively without a transcode

have you considered using  the program - Compressor -lets you do many things with video bitrates-- i have used it with FCP and even works with imovieHD6 OR another program is  Voltaic HD? which can put you files into QT then from there into Compressor to save chapter markers as FCP does not.
others on this post have said some things  in the past with some of my postings that were very personal. But not from the originator of this Thread. just a waste of my 2cents

I use compressor but I need to edit first with fcp
99% of what I do via camcorder is concerts, dance recitals, performances with 2 cams and audio dubbing
THen I go to fcp > compressor > dvd
