Title: Building your own Preamp?
Post by: lordbelial on July 27, 2005, 10:58:35 AM
Hi there!

Just have one simple question.

I would like to build my own "home made" preamp for my mics and battery box. I really don't know if this is a good idea, so I'm referring to you.

Since in my country, Spain, there is no taper culture just like in the USA, we can't get phantom powered mics (because they're not as stealthier as condenser mics just like the core sounds or the ATXXX from Soundprofessionals), and Pre-amps, A/D's, etc...

My first thought was a pre-amp stage between the output of my battery box (SP-SPBS-1) and the line-in from my NJB3. Just because,

-Battery bax is powering my mics
-So, I could boost the output from my battery box
-So my levels in NJB3 would be higher, keeping my NJB3 at 0 db gain (because I prefer that, NJB3 gain is pure digital and I prefer to boost later, in adobe audition)

But I have no idea on where can I start...

So, any help? Would be very appreciated, and, if the project is succesfull, could be a very good help for tapers like me, who are obligated on keeping his gears and rigs as stealthier as possible.

Thanks!

I think this is what you want:

A simple preamp based on a single OPamp chip like NE5532.  I've also used OPA2134 in this circuit.  It is really easy to build and a lot of fun.

I'll second that recommendation!

Thanks.

I guess I'll build up the "pre" during this weekend. I'll let you know how it worked.

There are some fairly easy DIY projects out there. Both Forssell Technologies and Audio Upgrades make small preamp cards that can be put together fairly easily. The Forssell is a discrete design, and the Audio Upgrade module is a combination of discrete transistor and high speed monolithic op amps. Good luck and if you have any more questions I'll see what resources I can dig up for you.
