Hey now Im sorry if this was asked before.
Im wondering what I might need to get a board patch for my D8
What cables would I need, Im not even sure what possible connections
I would have available

Im asking because I had the chance last friday when my buddy and his band
played CBGB in NYC. The soundguy was very friendly , but he had no clue as
to what I would need. He also said he had no headphones so I was better
off using my mic anyway. If I had the proper cables I could have patched in,
but in the sound man's opinion a mic would have been better...

The soundguy was really cool and answered a ton of my questions,
and even had me watch the area at a couple of points thru the night

anyway how can I prepare in advance for a possible SBD patch into my D8?

You'll need several cables all terminating in a single 1/8" stereo jack.

Get these and you'll be good:

Pick up a 1/8" attenuator cable (http://www.micsupply.com/linecables.htm) and you're completely set.

When patching SBD>D8, be sure to have the board signal turned down to a reasonable level.  If you are using the entire meter range and your D8 gain pot is set really low (like 2-3), it is likely that the board signal is too hot and may overload your line stage input even though the OVR indicator on the D8 display will never illuminate. 

My first SBD>D7 patch was hosed because the board level was so hot it was overloading the line stage, even though the gain pot was set so that the meters never peaked.  The recording sounds decent until the harmonica and vocals came in loud and distorted.  The option I ended up with was some selectable attenuators that plug into the XLRs on the board so I could drop the pro line level signal down to the consumer line level.  But if you know the person running the board, you can just get them to turn it down for you.
