My living/listening room.
« on: April 10, 2008, 06:19:54 PM »
This is my home listening(and I know you tv guys are probably laughing at my tv, but I dont watch tv so much..once in a while I watch ovation or NGC, and I do play my xbox 360 a little)) environment(still evolving of course) at present. It consists of a OPPO DV-970, Mytek Stereo 96 DAC(an amazing DAC. and ive heard a lot of them, meitner, lavry, etc), Mastersound Due Venti Integrated Amplifier (until my LFD Zero MKIII Gets here..the Mastersound sounds really great, so I will keep it around in my studio space...it has had a couple of rather substantial repair issues from the outset, but ive spent the money and now she is flawless and of course looks very nice..) , cables are the Analysis Plus Oval 9 Series (thanks for the suggestion, Mike French!), power conditioning is RGPC 400 (which, next to the acoustics treatment, I believe has made the most substantial difference in the end result. I had the psaudio quintet before the RGPC, but on a whim I tried the RGPC and found the difference to be like night and day, black background, dynamics, everything showed a marked improvement..It literally blew my mind in a way that no other single product has. Used to think that some of the power products were nonsense, but have evidence to the contrary now. My studio partner and I have also put 3 units in our studio and to our amazement, we are now able to peg the faders on our 2nd string console(Soundcraft Ghost) with no noise whatsoever..try them if you can..amazing stuff. My speakers are AudioKinesis Jazz Modules I looked a long time to find these, and what sold me on them (other than the reviews and the sound of course) was Duke Lejeune(the creator and owner of Audio Kinesis). He is one of the nicest, most humble, straightforward, nononsense guys I have ever met, (he  will actually deliver the speakers personally to your residence). (on the homepage he also offers to pay accomodations to visit his place in Logan). The Speakers are phenomenal and burn my poor VR-4s asunder. (VR-4s are now in Kaia(my daughter)'s room) oh yeah...those black panels are from GIK acoustics .. I used that auralex garbage before discovering Glenn's products (Glenn Kuras, owner of GIK) and have discovered that the money I spent on Auralex was for nothing really...Treatment is important! Makes an enormous difference on the sound! I plan to get a nice SACD player and tuner within the year, but dont really care about vinyl.

oh yes... my Integrated Amp power tubes are a quad of SED "Winged C" EL34s and preamp tubes are RCA 5814s . I also have access to as many Tung Sol military grades as I need.

sorry for being so longwinded.

nice

Thanks a lot, Micheal.  Hopefully my LFD will be here soon. Forgot to mention that another cool thing about these speakers is that you can easily customize the HF and LF response by adding one of 4 different resistors or port extenders. The resistors are simply strapped across the top two jacks(on these speakers, there are 4 speaker cable jacks, but only the bottom two are used, top are for modifying freq. response) with the legs of the resistors simply sticking through the holes in the jacks.. the ports are easy to modify too, basically just by taking the port off the bottom , slapping the extender on and putting it back.

Hey Teddy, do you bypass the gain knob on the Mytek?

Very nice, indeed!

Yes, I disabled it completely. THere is an internal jumper configuration that allows one to disable it. (the way that I have it, the pot on the mytek controls headphone output, but does not affect the speaker outputs).
It is essentially the same as running with the pot wide open, but I went ahead and disabled it. It is also very important to calibrate the mytek with your equipment. Do you have the st 96? if so, have you calibrated it? If you need help, just shoot me a pm.

I love dual concentric drivers.  Tannoy sold me on the concept with their designs.  Huge, huge, soundstage and very stable.  Room treatments need to come soon for my rig though I have to admit I like a little extra help from the room for the bass so probably wouldn't use the traps.  Nice setup, thanks for sharing.
Yes, but what do you HEAR?
