Lexicon busted passing Oppo off as a $3500 Blu-ray player

If Lexicon is your favorite brand then here's a shocker, the company figured if it isn't broke, then don't fix it and grabbed an Oppo BDP-83 Blu-ray player and encased it into a high end chassis and listed it for $3500.

Yea, saw this yesterday while window shopping for a new HT pre-pro.  wonder if I should add Lexicon to my list right below B & K of folks i won;t do business with.

Oppo is the only name on my list for a Bluray source, even before I read this.

Not perusing B&K anymore mainly because of the promises an under-delivering on the Ref 80 as well as the non-existent  upgrade path which they claim to offer.  I am sure the amps are solid but not really wanting to get into their pre-pro line.

Currently leaning toward the Onkyo pr-sc5507p.

Key Features I'm looking for
HDMI switching/upscaling, balanced outputs and auto room correction

I have an oooooold B&K ST-140 that's awesome.  But I heard B&K got bought out later on and it went downhill.  Still looks pretty good for the price point though, YMMV...

Gene DellaSala at Audioholics re-tested the Lexicon unit for multi-channel performance, and found it actually underperforms the Oppo, because Oppo has released a number of firmware updates to address bass management issues, whereas Lexicon has not!

http://forums.audioholics.com/forums...4&postcount=81

All this combined with Lexicons reluctance to come clean on the issue doesnt look good for their future.

hope no one is trying to sell a used deck cuz the bottom just fell out of their resale values.

I wonder if you could flash the Lexicon rebrand with an Oppo firmware though...

I would assume the upgrade process does some sort of checksum verification.  Most likely it would be different due to the Lexicon branding changes.  I would assume one would need to modify the update process to account for the checksum change.
