Shure E3 repair, or change?
« on: May 05, 2010, 08:53:08 PM »
I've had a pair of Shure E3 in-ear monitors for about 5-6 years. Band bought them when we were still playing. I kept them for mobile listening and and have loved them. About 3 months ago one side started shorting out, now both are shorting. I've determined that it's the cabling and not inside the buds, I'm pretty sure. They are several years past warranty and will cost about $80-$90 to get Shure to repair them and send them back. If I recall back in 2004/2005 we paid about $300 a pair. The newer version of this model looks to be retailing for between $200-$250 now.

My question...is there something else out there that's comparable that may be around the cost (or not much more) of the repair? I'm looking for small ear buds with full range highs, mids and decent lows. I've got no problem spending the money to take care of my gear, I just want to see what my options are.

Had some distortion in mine. Sent them into Shure and they sent me a new pair for free... YMMV though...

I bought a pair used that already had a new plug on the end. I say repair them. I love mine. The 1/8" plug should be $5 or $6. Soldering something that always pisses me off, but if you're not up for it I'm sure you could find somebody here that'd take care of it for you.
Pockets full of nickels and nothing left to eat, and I'm stuck behind a semi on Soniat Street.

Got ya. I did read that, just wasn't sure if that meant no additional charge on top of the basic repair fee.

From what I read, you send in payment with the item to be repaired.

Do you have any contact info for them? I'd like to talk/email with someone before I send them off to be looked at.

Um, it was a while ago, but as I remember it went something like this:
-emailed them telling my problem
-they sent me a RA form
-sent them in and they told me they could replace them for like $50 since they were out of warranty
-I said forget about it send em back (I think I planned on upgrading)
-got a package back with all my info and brand new IEMs in it

Like I said, YMMV, but I've hear from others that they have had the same thing happen...
