Which Is the Better Rig Setup?
« on: March 03, 2007, 12:49:06 AM »
I just picked up an Edirol R-09 which should allow me to be very lightweight and maybe even stealthy with the active caps separated from the bodies on my new rig.

MBHO-603a/KA200 > SD MP-2 > Edirol R-09

For open taping, I'm wondering if there's any advantage to putting my stock UA-5 in front of the R-09 as the ADC.

MBHO-603a/KA200 > SD MP-2 > Edirol UA-5 > Edirol R-09

A third option would be to keep the stream all digital by going optical out of the UA-5 to the JB3.

MBHO-603a/KA200 > SD MP-2 > Edirol UA-5 > JB3

Any opinions as to which of these three would be the best setup for open taping or are they equal?

Thanks

Steve

dont do the middle one... the ua-5 doesnt have pass through so you will be going a/d and then d/a into the r-09.

the r-09 has pretty good a/d from what i hear.

the ua-5 > jb3 would be the way i would go open.
open: mbho 603a (ka200n/ka500hn) > SD MP-2 > PCM-M10
stealth: AT853a (o/sc/c/h) > SD MP-2 > ihp120
misc: Earthworks SR77 | Shure VP88

MBHO-603a/KA200 > SD MP-2 > Edirol R-09

I would go the minimalist route.........
DPA/HEB 4060's > R09HR
MBHO648/KA100Lk/KA200/KA300/KA500 > SD702

This hands down is the combo you want.  MBHO's are mics which sound fantastic with the MP-2, in fact many people think they sound the best with it.   The R-09 also has a fantastic a/d for what it is.  You won't regret it.

Regardless of whether the RO9 or UA5 has the better A/D, the R09 doesn't have a digital in, so ultimately you'll be using it's A/D stage regardless.

I agree with the posts above, in this situation leave the UA5 out of the chain...

i will say that after re-reading the mics in this situtation, i would agree with sanjay.  the mp-2 and mbho combo does sound sweet.

that said, the hos > mp2 > r-09 would be the best all around rig... open or stealth.
open: mbho 603a (ka200n/ka500hn) > SD MP-2 > PCM-M10
stealth: AT853a (o/sc/c/h) > SD MP-2 > ihp120
