edirol + CA 14
« on: August 30, 2012, 04:45:22 PM »
Does an Edirol R-09HR put out enough power to run a pair of CA 14 mics?
I am going to a show this saturday and i would love to record it. Show shouldn't run for more than 3 hours. Will my Edirol have enough power for the mics?
I know a pre amp is the answer but unless a postal miracle happens tomorrow, that won't be an option.
Thanks.
BCB

Not recommended by anyone here. It may seem to be working, but will likely distort during the loudest parts.

Most likely, you'd get a better sounding recording using the HR's internal mics. I made a test recording of a few tracks with mine once. It didn't distort and sounded pretty decent if you're not too picky. A recording with CA-14s and no battery box will likely have parts that sound horrible due to distortion.

If you go that route, be sure not to move your hand on the recorder or you will pick up up handling noise that could ruin the recording. I gripped mine firmly and made sure not to reposition my hand on the recorder. If you do need to reposition, do it during applause where any resulting noise can be edited out.

I have experience (misplaced or forgotten cables  >:() with CA-14 cards straight into the R-09HR at rock concerts from balconies (I'm rarely on the floor)* and sound quality was just as good as with a BB if a tiny bit noisier. I can't comment about how they'll do on the floor, or particularly close to the stacks, however, so keep that in mind. The next issue you'll have is battery time. Using PIP drains the batteries very quickly, and if you aren't careful you might end up juggling batteries, or perhaps be SOL if you only bring one pair.

*Actually, I did have to do this at a somewhat loud show at Lincoln Hall earlier this year. It's a small venue, and even being on the floor right by the board (as far back as you can be) is only 40' or so. The stacks weren't blasting quite as loud as in an arena, mind you, but they still handled everything fine. The distortion I ended up with was caused by not being able to check the levels for various reasons and having to guess about where would be good. I didn't do so bad, though!

i just recorded Ben Harper outdoors in San Diego with CA-14 Omnis into Mic in on my Sony m-10 and it sounds great.   Was FOB in the sweet spot. Set the sensitivity to low on the m-10 you will likely have similar settings on the Edirol I assume
