DAC 2 not compatible with dvd's?
« on: February 03, 2005, 01:51:49 PM »
This is just bizarre. When I put a concert DVD in my Toshiba 3960 and switch to the Bel Canto DAC 2 I get this really awful noise, like a sputtering disc or paper flipping noise... very intense and obnoxious. If I then turn the input dial to the straight Toshiba analog in the nosie goes away and the disc plays fine. All CD's play fine digi out of the toshiba, it's just my concert dvd's that are giving me these problems and it's happened on GD, Phish, and WSP official Live Concert DVD's...

any thoughts as to why my DAC2 will not accept a digi signal from these discs?

I’ve had a few weird experiences and a few close brushes with total weirdness of one sort or another, but nothing that’s really freaked me out or made me feel too awful about it. - Jerry Garcia

could be that the toshiba's outputting a 5.1 digisignal to the dac 2 and it doesn't know how to decode that.  You likely have a setting on your toshiba to force it to only output 2 channel via the digiout.

I had the opposite problem with my (sony) dvd player -- it was set by default to ONLY digitally output the 2 channel pcm audio info included on dvds and to ignore the 5.1 (DTS) info -- thus, my sony digital receiver wasn't receiving the 5.1 info.

Turns out that most dvds contain 2 seperate audio "tracks" a standard 2 channel version and a 5.1 (DTS) channel version. Playing  5.1 (DTS) audio through a digital device that doesn't recognize 5.1 (Dts) makes the noise tim mentioned.

its the Toshiba
mine does it to.  Only with some burns, but not with others.  I thought it might be the audio-DVD creator software to blame...but sounds like that might not be the case.
