If I remember correctly, the D7/D8 will take 24 bits and truncate them to 16-bits (no dithering, simply chop them). I know Doug talked about this a few times on the Oade board. You might dig through the archives there for more detailed information.

All portable DAT machines truncate the last 8 bits when given a 24 bit signal.  

Tascam has 3 studio machines that will record at 24 bits: DA-45HR, DA-78HR, and the DA-98HR.  They play the tape ~2x faster while recording to achive the higher bit rate.  They report 1:48 of record time on a 120m tape.
