Did I just cook my AD2K?
« on: May 23, 2008, 08:15:24 PM »
I just tried connecting my AD2K into a 14.4v lithium power supply through the 4 pin>adaptaplug N.  The 2k would not turn on, and when I reconnected it to the lead it came on however the low battery light came on as well.  The lead was charged and is know to be good.  I was pretty sure the 2k could take voltages over 14v.  Can anyone shed some light?

I tested it out this morning and it still works fine, but the low battery light stays on, and I know the lead has a good charge.  Maybe I just screwed up the calibration of the low batt light?  I checked the AD2k manual, nd it says it can accept input voltages up to 18v.  I think the kid that made the cable fucked it up.

fyi, the ad2k needs 10.5V min to stay in spec. internally regulates it to 10V
i use 10.6V li-ions, which run from 12V down to 10.5V.

You'll waste a lot of power running it off of a 14.4V battery which will feed it 14-16V and dissipate  1/3 of the energy as heat

john siau's instructions for calibrating power leds:

R65 adjusts the threshold of the LEDs.  Feed the converter from an
external DC power supply and set the supply to the voltage at which you
want the RED LED to turn on.  Turn the pot until the LED is off, then
turn it slowly until the LED turns on.

The battery voltage is regulated down to 10V using and LM2940-10 LDO
voltage regulator.  If the voltage drops below 10.5 V the internal rail
will start to drop below 10V and you will start to loose headroom.  What
this means is that the converter may start to clip before reaching 0
dBFS.  It could start clipping at -1 or -2 dBFS.  If you must operate in
a low battery situation, avoid levels higher than -6dBFS and you should
be OK.

Thanks jamie.  I need to find a good battery for my AD2K, and I have limited soldering skills.  So aside from building one from scratch do you know of any good store bought options.  I fear if I don't get the battery situation straightened out I may sell the box out of frustration! >:(

Thanks for the info on the led calibration.

any of those batterypacks would really benefit from a small enclosure with an internal fuse and a heavy duty jack. im sure someone on this board has the time to make you something like that (wish i did!)

and a tamiya>4 pin is no problem to whip up?

Thanks for the help
