Title: CD Media Rant...
Post by: Phil on September 15, 2007, 11:40:14 PM
WTF...  I am so sick of the CD medium, I just have to voice my concerns.  Their large, fragile, only hold 700MB, scratch like a SOB, degrade over time, and freekin skip! >:D

With all the technology today is there not a better medium out there?  How bout making some durable, cheap,  compact, hi-capacity chip that will replace the CD? Something like the SD or SD-micro card?

The best invention I've seen so far the is a USB input on car and home audio.  I just bought my wife a new car stereo for ($79 (best buy)that has both an 3.5mm aux input and a usb input.  You can hook a 500gb hard drive up to this and never have to worry about a skip again. Too bad it can't play flac or that my wife cares about those features.

BTW I see the DVD as having just about all the same problems.

CD's suck!  Thoughts? opinions?

Hard drives will skip too, given the opportunity.

I motion to move to flash media immediately! I can't wait until it catches up with the current iPod crop.

100GB of memory on a single flash card would seriously give me a hardon.

Will it do the same for me???     LOL

But losing 500GB HD or 100GB flash card is much worse than losing 700MB CD, right?

That's always been one of my biggest concerns, hence I like to keep multiple backups, on different types of media.

Thats what I do with my masters.  I store the authored flacs on a NAS RAID for listening over the LAN, then I make DVDs of the tracked flacs and the master flacs using two brands of DVD media incase one copy is on a bad batch.  I pass out copies of DVDs with the tracked flacs to my buddies incase a house fire takes my archive.  I have authored DVD and CDDA discs for the car.  It's sort of over kill.  I don't have back-ups of my DATs.  I wonder how many of those 14yo tapes are flaking away in the back of the closet.

I don't know why anyone would use CDs for storage anymore when DVDs are available.  Has anyone made the switch to dual layer yet?

500GB drive is great until it fails. All well and good if a backup was made.

It seems the key is to just keep migrating the important data onto the new formats, not to toss the obsolete backup media, and to make sure masters are adequately backed up and stored in multiple locations.
